Sustainable Tourism Initiative phase 2 begins
Certification to be implemented across nine provincesSri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Ministry of Tourism with the technical and financial assistance of UNDP in Sri Lanka has initiated the National Sustainable Destination Certification (NSDC) scheme to transform nine chosen destinations in nine provinces with the best sustainable practices as the second phase of the National Sustainable Tourism Initiative. Realising the value while observing the current importance given to sustainable tourism globally, in the year 2018 Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority entered into an MoU with UNDP Sri Lanka followed by the launch of the National Sustainable Tourism Certification (NSTC) Scheme in 2019 where 37 accommodation service providers were awarded for their best sustainable practices. Sri Lanka is a small island vulnerable to climate change with its tourism product heavily dependent on natural resources, hence it is essential to develop the industry sustainably,” noted Chairperson – Sri Lanka Tourism Kimarli Fernando. Over the course of this year, Sri Lanka Tourism and UNDP Sri Lanka have conducted eight provincial trainings with the participation of provincial council officials, regional authorities and community stakeholders, on transforming destinations by implementing the best sustainable tourism practices in their respective provinces and locality. Commenting on the initiative, UNDP in Sri Lanka National Programme Officer – Climate and Environment Team Ramitha Wijethunge stated: “UNDP has been a long-standing partner of the sustainability initiatives spearheaded by Sri Lanka Tourism.

Hitting the high note of his career

Coming back to Sri Lanka, I got some positive feedback on the photos I took, but the camera was just lying around the house untouched unless I went on a trip. Within wildlife photography, the most unforgettable experience has been seeing three leopards in a single frame in both Yala and Wilpattu. Apart from that, wildlife photography is always challenging. The waiting game sometimes rewards you, sometimes not, and that’s the nature of wildlife photography.

Sri Lanka and Cuba discuss cooperation in pharmaceutical and vaccine production
The new Ambassador of Cuba to Sri Lanka Andres Marcelo Gonzalez Garrido called on Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena today (29) at the Foreign Ministry. Minister Gunawardena welcomed Ambassador Garrido, who had presented his credentials to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 22 July, 2021. Foreign Minister Gunawardena conveyed President Rajapaksa’s appreciation to the Cuban government for the continued support and cooperation extended to Sri Lanka at multilateral fora, particularly at the United Nations Human Rights Council. Ambassador Garrido briefed the Foreign Minister Gunawardena on recent developments in Cuba and the Latin American region. Foreign Minister Gunawardena also discussed a wide-range of bilateral matters with Ambassador Garrido, including the possibility to forge further cooperation in the areas of pharmaceutical and vaccine production, coconut and sugarcane cultivation and Spanish language courses in Sri Lanka, with a view to enhance the cordial relations prevailing at all levels between Sri Lanka and Cuba.

Multi-pronged tourism promo plan unveiled
By Dinitha RathnayakeA joint promotional programme is being formulated to attract more tourists to Sri Lanka from Sunday (1) onwards, which is to be implemented by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), tour operators, and airlines. A special discussion on the action plan to be implemented under this programme was held at the Tourism Ministry recently, under the patronage of Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga. In addition, the Minister has instructed the SLTPB to implement worldwide promotional programmes to attract tourists to Sri Lanka. The main objective of this is to provide accurate information about Sri Lanka to foreign tourists visiting the country, through the tour guides. Among them, 1,580 have been registered with the SLTDA as National Tourist Guides, 1,336 as Tourist Guide Drivers, 934 as Provincial Tourist Guides, and 93 as Local Tourist Guides.

Health Ministry advises vaccine refusers
BY Buddhika SamaraweeraThe Health Ministry has urged the public to consult with the relevant Medical Officer of Health (MOH) or any other qualified medical officer if they have any issue with regard to obtaining of Covid-19 vaccines. Further, he explained what should be done if anyone has some issue with getting the Covid-19 vaccine. Do not avoid getting the vaccine unless you have been advised by a medical officer not to take the vaccine due to a reasonable medical condition,” he elaborated. However, he said that if anyone had a misconception about the Covid-19 vaccine or any other vaccine, the Health Ministry would take steps to educate them, thereby encouraging such individuals to receive the vaccine. According to the Epidemiology Unit, as of 8.30 p.m. on 28 July, a total of 10,712,817 Covid-19 vaccine doses had been administered in Sri Lanka, including 1,311,127 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine, 8,363,464 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, 173,584 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine, 155,017 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and 709,625 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

Saubhagya Production Villages Programme: 500 manufacturing villages before year end
The Saubhagya Production Villages programme that focuses on building an economic link between the remote communities and the city is expected to establish 500 manufacturing villages islandwide by the end of this year. When selecting these manufacturing villages, additional consideration was given to communities whose households already supply the same commodities individually or in clusters. 10 million for a single village, allowing each manufacturer to purchase the equipment required individually or for the village in general. It is assisted by Grama Niladharis, Agricultural Research Production Assistants, Development Officers, and Samurdhi Officers. Under the Saubhagya Production Villages programme, production villages have been identified, covering all districts of the country.
