With Le Galadari Méridien one of our sponsors, we hit upon the idea of presenting a monthly component called “French Cuisine on Bonsoir”. Our rendezvous with French cuisine was early on a Saturday morning when the restaurant was empty and we had it all to ourselves. And with them, Yasmin took Bonsoir’s viewers on a gastronomic tour through different parts of France and through different genres of cuisine. We have also had our share of unforgettable moments filming French cuisine. Aaaah the delights of French cuisine indeed!

The birth of the Life short film competitionThe Life Short Film Competition (LSFC) was created by young filmmaker and Life Broadcasting Productions Director Rajeev Colton to do just this. “It’s an idea I’ve had for a while,” Rajeev said when speaking with Brunch, “I’ve loved film since I was six years old, and while I was studying for my undergrad degree, there was a very similar short film competition that my professor introduced me to. Sending feelers out, he found that there was a lot of interest, and this led to the forming of the Life Short Film Competition, which took place for the first time in 2020. It’s been a lot of work and has been exhausting, but overall, it has also been very rewarding to get to know people in the same line of work and know that they are passionate about the same things.”To watch the short films put forward by this year’s teams and to vote for the Life Short Film Competition Audience Choice Award, please visit the Life Short Film Competition’s Facebook and Instagram Page. The Life Short Film Competition Film Awards will take place on 30 July at 7 p.m. through their Facebook page.

By Shahaen Vishak“I remember one time, I went to fill in for a drummer in a gig at a restaurant in Colombo. Most recently, he scored a long-term contract with global giant Paiste Cymbals, becoming an ambassador for a top-notch international manufacturer of metal percussion instruments. But building a brand is what Jimith did, playing gigs, doing session recordings, teaching drum lessons, and managing himself as an artist. “A lot of the exposure started with this drum cover I uploaded on YouTube, of the song Rosanna by Toto. It would be like a month-long tour, where we go to schools around the island to teach school kids about drums, especially traditional drums.

Despite a growing need for childcare, for many women, finding quality and affordable childcare is difficult, and childcare costs are very high. Why employer-supported childcare is attractiveMost Sri Lankan families are struggling to meet the costs of childcare. Even low-income families have to bear the high cost of childcare due to the absence of affordable childcare arrangements. Due to the lack of affordable childcare, women are attracted to employer-supported childcare as it helps them to concentrate on their work without worrying about their children. Accordingly, employer-supported childcare would encourage women to enter the labour market and enable working mothers to remain in the labour market.

BY Buddhika SamaraweeraThe All Ceylon Nurses’ Union (ACNU) has alleged that the rapid antigen tests (RATs) carried out on patients admitted to hospitals islandwide are not being conducted properly due to certain arbitrary actions of two nurses’ trade unions, namely the Government Nursing Officers’ Union (GNOU) and the Public Services United Nurses’ Union (PSUNU). Medawatte, speaking to The Morning, alleged that the GNOU and the PSUNU have withdrawn from taking biological samples from patients to conduct RATs, without giving any clear reasons as to why. “Until last June, all patients admitted to all hospitals for inpatient treatment underwent RATs, taking into account the current Covid-19 pandemic situation. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera said that it is the duty of doctors to conduct RATs. He also added that the entire hospital staff and other patients are at serious risk due to the failure to identify Covid-19 patients.
