About six years ago, I wrote a letter ‘Planting palm trees’ (Feb 6, 2017) about the folly of planting such trees in Islamabad. In fact, these full-grown palm trees are now nothing but an ugly and hideous sight. I have no idea what is the compulsion of replanting full-grown palm trees instead of patronising and sticking to our own indigenous trees, like the evergreen pine. They will not be able to do this by planting palm trees. Even if there is some reason to insist on having palm trees, why not plant young saplings instead of replanting full-grown trees?

Telix has announced that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase 1 study of its investigational targeted radiation therapy, TLX250, combined with Merck’s DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) inhibitor candidate, peposertib (M3814). The study is in patients with solid tumours expressing the potential pan-cancer target, carbonic-anhydrase IX (CAIX). The STARSTRUCK trial is an open-label, single-arm, multicentre dose escalation and dose expansion study to evaluate the safety profile, dosing and activity of TLX250 in combination with peposertib. Telix said the clinical hypothesis is that the combination of TLX250 and a DNA-PK inhibitor enhances potency through their synergistic action on cancer cells. Targeted radiation effectively induces DNA damage in targeted cancer cells and the DNA-PK inhibitor may act to prevent the cell from repairing this damage, resulting in higher potency at lower doses.

According to a major condition, the average premium between the interbank and open market exchange rates would not be more than 1.25% during any consecutive five business days. “These interventions have undermined public trust in the exchange rate system and, going forward, it will be necessary to ensure that the exchange rate will be market-determined, allowed to act as a shock absorber, and free from formal or informal guidance or restrictions,” it added. The IMF “staff emphasised that a functioning and flexible exchange rate market should be the means to address BOP pressures, rather than administrative and exchange measures”. “Gross financing needs are very large, mostly due to large debt service payments, while external market financing has dried up.

Pakistan’s top military commanders strongly reject the Afghan Taliban’s claims that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operates outside Afghan soil. The presence of sanctuaries and access to advanced weapons enable the TTP and similar groups to undermine Pakistan’s security and stability. The Afghan Taliban’s recent denial, in contrast to their previous talks with TTP leadership, suggests growing mistrust between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This shift raises concerns about the Afghan Taliban’s commitment to addressing the TTP issue and fostering bilateral cooperation. The TTP’s sanctuaries and access to advanced weaponry across the border pose serious threats to Pakistan’s security.
