In the annals of history, we often find ourselves enamored by the concept of inevitable progress and a linear path toward a brighter future. As we observe our nation’s history, we can identify moments of enlightenment. We need to recognize our distinct circumstances and seek tailored approaches to address our specific issues effectively. Pakistan’s journey as a nation, marked by struggles and successes, requires a critical reevaluation of the once unwavering faith in linear progress and historical determinism. Instead, by embracing a nuanced understanding of our past and forging tailored approaches, we have the opportunity to shape a brighter and more sustainable future, uniquely suited to our nation’s distinct circumstances.

The surge in inflation has been primarily attributed to a significant rise in electricity charges, exacerbating the financial burden on households. Measured by the Sensitive Price Index (SPI), short-term inflation saw a week-on-week increase of 0.69 percent, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by both economists and consumers. One of the contributing factors to the soaring inflation is the 1.75 percent increase in electricity tariffs during the first quarter. Moreover, the most substantial week-on-week price hikes were recorded in chillies powder (3.72 percent), powdered milk (3.65 percent), pulse mash (3.13 percent), garlic (2.39 percent), sugar (2.30 percent), chicken (2.27 percent), salt (1.84 percent), and eggs (1.74 percent). This shift is mainly attributed to the surge in petroleum prices during July, following a slight drop in June.

Significant setback as the inflow of workers’ remittances from overseas Pakistanis through official channels dropped to a five-month low of $2 billion in July. This notable decline in remittances could potentially reverse the favourable current account balance achieved over the last four consecutive months, tipping it into deficit in July. This explains the relatively better remittance inflows from Western countries compared to the Middle East, where inflation hasn’t been a significant concern recently. Remittances from the US experienced a 4% drop as well, falling to $238 million from $248 million. Furthermore, remittances from other countries saw a substantial 25% decrease, settling at $398 million for July, compared to $527 million during the same month last year.
