Only a few weeks ago, there was a state of uncertainty around the possibility of general elections. Sunday night’s nominations for the federal and provincial legislatures came to an end with prominent members of the major political parties submitting their candidatures. In the meanwhile, the legitimacy of the voting process is crucial, as these writers have discussed.

In an era where digitalisation has revolutionised various sectors, the absence of digital voters’ lists is not only detrimental but also imposes unnecessary barriers to a fair electoral landscape. Despite possessing the capability to digitalise electoral rolls, the reluctance to openly disseminate this information raises serious questions about the transparency of the electoral process. According to a senior ECP official, digitalising electoral rolls could substantially lower expenses compared to the current system of obtaining photocopies from ECP offices. Failure to provide accessible digital lists not only impedes progress but also perpetuates an environment where individuals with limited resources struggle to participate effectively. The Election Commission must swiftly implement digital voting mechanisms and provide easy access to electoral rolls online, thereby fostering a fair and accessible democratic landscape for all citizens.

Despite directives from the President and WMP, the newly constructed housing at PHA Kurri Residencia is still awaiting an access road. This road serves Federal Urdu University and a densely populated area, including government offices under construction. The PHA Kurri Road encompasses 588 housing units, where senior retired officers reside. The residents also urgently need gas facilities, considering that pipes are laid, and a service station is established. I request the Prime Minister of Pakistan to take notice of the difficulties faced by the residents of Residencia and ensure prompt action on the road access, security, and gas facilities.

In Pakistan, the education system’s poor quality undermines merit-based grading in schools and job placements. Three concurrent education systems operate in Pakistan: public and non-elite private schools, elitist private schools, and religious seminaries (madaris). Elitist private schools, despite high fees, provide international-standard education, while middle-class students attend private public schools with lower quality and facilities. With the prevalence of jobbery and a lack of job opportunities in public offices, disadvantaged segments withdraw children from school, leading to child labor and increased income. To prevent chaos and internal strife, justice and merit-based job allocation are imperative.

Global examples abound, showcasing countries with similar challenges where bold leadership decisions and a commitment to population planning led to phenomenal improvements in their development trajectories. For instance, in the post-revolution Iran, the Supreme Leader issued an edict that led to a successful population planning programme. Kenya, Indonesia and Rwanda experienced successful population planning programmes and subsequent economic turnarounds with strong support from their heads of government. In the pre-election period, it is an opportune moment for political leaders to demonstrate genuine leadership.
