The Alumni of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Bauchi have expressed concern, and dismay over the incidence of uncoordinated protests staged by the students of the institution which resulted in the destruction of properties within and outside the school premises. According to the Alumni, “The step taken in that direction was commendable. It stated that the protest was not organized or coordinated by the students union leaders stating,” If students contest and won the election through popular votes, they can give directions. The Alumni further beseech for soft- hands while taking on the grips of the involved physically in the protest if they happen to be students of the institution. “Finally, we must commend the calmness and resilience of the Rector in handling the trending situation in recent times,” it concluded.

Nigerian long jumper, Ese Brume, on Wednesday, said she would be targeting a gold medal in her next competition. The PUNCH reports that Brume produced her biggest jump of the year in Oregon, USA to become the first Nigerian athlete to win medals at two World Athletics Championships. She won the silver medal in Oregon, an upgrade to the bronze she won in Doha in 2019. The Olympic bronze medallist leaped 7.02m and finished behind Germany’s Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo, who leaped 7.12m, and Brazil’s Leticia Oro Melo jumped 6.89m to take bronze. But speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, brume noted that her next target after the silver medal would be gold.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State command on Tuesday paraded one Bola Awolumate, who allegedly obtained a sum of N570,000 under the pretence of assisting his victims to procure travelling visas to Norway and Saudi Arabia. The Osun NSCDC commandant, Sunday Agboola, who paraded the suspect, said Awolumate was living around Oke Abesu area of Osogbo, where he met his victims and obtained the sum from them. Agboola said the suspect later reneged on the promises to procure visas and get jobs for the victims. Agboola said, when the matter was reported to the command by the complainants, his men swung into action and arrested the suspect, adding that during interrogation, Awolumate said he committed the crime. He said, “The next step is to charge the case to court where his fate will be determined.”Responding to questions from The PUNCH, Awolumate owned up to the crime, saying he was displeased and embarrassed by the turn of events.

Authorities in India’s western state of Gujarat are investigating an incident in which at least 28 people died and more than 50 were admitted to hospital after drinking spurious liquor, an official said on Tuesday (July 26). Industrial methyl alcohol stolen from a chemical unit was used to make the spurious liquor, Gujarat’s Director General of Police, Ashish Bhatia told reporters. Cases have been registered and 13 persons have been named, of whom a majority have been rounded up. The incidents took place in the adjacent districts of Ahmedabad and Botad, Mr Bhatia said. Deaths from illegally produced alcohol, popularly called hooch or country liquor, are common in India, where few drinkers can afford branded spirits.

The Katsina State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, has flagged off a “School Enrolment Drive” in two local government areas (LGAs) of the state. Mr Lawal said that the campaign was aimed at tracking the high number of out-of-school children in the two LGAs. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Musa Dankama, the commissioner said that the move was to ensure that out-of- school children were returned to school. In his remark, the Chairman, Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Lawal Buhari, said the campaign entailed the training of stakeholders who would ensure that school age children are in school. Earlier, the SUBEB UNICEF Focal Person, Hauwau Kaikai, maintained that the campaign was to build community consensus on the best approach to get the affected children back in school.
