At least 20 people died and several others were injured in a fire at the Mahdia Secondary School in the central Guyanese mining town of Mahdia, officials say. The incident happened in the early hours of Monday, engulfing a secondary school dormitory and trapping students. Several more people have been injured and some are being prepared for evacuation to the capital, Georgetown, where a special centre has been set up. The Guyanese government’s initiative to raise the standard of education in the country’s less developed regions is focused on the Mahdia Secondary School Dormitory, where the fire occurred. The building of the school dormitory is referred to in past government comments as an endeavour to “bridge the gaps between the hinterland and coastal areas.”Guyana is located between Venezuela and Suriname on the northern coast of South America.

A new bill to impose five years’ mandatory service on Nigeria’s medical graduates in an effort to stop the exodus of doctors to the UK and the US has been attacked as “obnoxious”. “The government has invested so much money in training these medical doctors,” he said. It is another factor driving Nigerian doctors abroad. The UK is the biggest recruiter of Nigerian doctors, alongside Canada, the US and Saudi Arabia. Nigerian doctors say that the country’s private sector suffers even more than the state-funded system.

An Army veteran who lost both his legs in Afghanistan has reached the top of Mount Everest in an attempt to make mountaineering history. Hari Budha Magar, a former soldier in the Gurkha regiment, set out to be the first double above-the-knee amputee to scale the mountain. Hari, 43, who lives in Canterbury, took on the challenge to “inspire others” and change perceptions of disability. He reached the summit at about 15:00 BST on Friday, his team said. Over a satellite phone call, he told them it was “harder than I could have ever imagined.”He said they just had to “carry on and push for the top, no matter how much it hurt or how long it took.”Hari lost his legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2010.

INFORMATION technology has altered our world, but the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has further captured the public attention and imagination. An ongoing show at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, curated by SMO Contemporary Art, titled ‘Kindred Spirits’, offers an artistic perspective. At least twelve people have died after a crush at a football stadium in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, according to officials. The incident occurred during a match between local team Alianza and the Santa Ana-based team Fas at Cuscatlán Stadium, with the match subsequently suspended. He said “everyone will be investigated, including teams, managers, stadium officials, the league and the federation. A live stream of the match posted on YouTube shows the match being suspended after an apparent commotion in the stands.
