Harnessing benefits of fuel subsidy removal
Though there are no institutionalised safety net programmes for most Nigerians, which is why fuel subsidy is regarded as one major way in which the government supports the over 63 per cent multi-dimensionally poor masses. According to Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative reports, fuel subsidy payments have gulped N13.7tn in the country’s national budgets between 2005 and 2021, an equivalent amount to the entire budget for health, education, agriculture and defence in the last five years. In the 2023 budget, President Muhammadu Buhari allocated N3.3tn to fund fuel subsidy for the first half of the year 2023, having (according to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation), spent N4.39tn on the same, in 2022. Subsidy reforms, resultantly, will be creating more fiscal space in the country’s general budgeting, hence increased fund allocation to critical MDAs. Finally, the President must ensure that round pegs are put in round holes in his appointment of officials to spearhead key reform agenda, while ensuring citizens’ involvement and provision of timely and accessible information on the utilisation of funds saved from the fuel subsidy removal.

One burnt alive, others detained, as villagers nab transformer vandals in Nnewi
A suspected transformer vandal met his waterloo in Anambra State on Wednesday as village youths captured and burnt him alive during a vandalization operation in the state. It was gathered that the incident happened at Ifite village in Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state. “The suspects, on sensing the presence of the villagers and the security, rushed into their cars and zoomed off. The first bus carrying four of them had escaped, but the people couldn’t catch them,” the eyewitness said. The captured suspects were reportedly beaten by the villagers, and the one who had been shot earlier in the leg was burned alive by the angry mob.

Court reserves judgment on property ownership rights in Kano metropolis
However, when the case resumed on Wednesday for hearing, counsel to the Applicant, Barrister Bashir Ibrahim urged the court to enforce fundamental rights of his client. The Counsel to the applicant further stated that the issue of property or who is the properly owner of the property is pending before state high court. He then maintained that the Kano Polythenic has it existence law that protects all its property, that is Kano Polythenic Law 2015. The Director argued that what is before the court is the Private Ownership Title trying to superceed public ownership, praying the Court to dismiss the case arguing that it has no bases in law. However ,after listening the submission of both counsel, Justice Amobeda said the court registry will communicate with both parties when his judgement is ready.

New SFU boss promises to tackle Internet fraud
The new Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Fraud Unit Annex Lagos State, Margaret Ochalla, has promised that her unit will tackle Internet fraud in the country by partnering with Financial Technology and telecommunication companies. Ochalla, who assumed office at the SFU located in the Ikoyi area of the state on Wednesday, also said the unit would partner with all financial institutions to curb the rising spate of Internet fraud in the country. Hence, there will be a renewed and deliberate effort on building human capacity through training and re-training of PSFU’s personnel. The CP, who was redeployed from the Anti-Fraud Section under the Force Criminal Investigation Department, also restated her vision and commitment to the force. She added, “It is my vision to make the Police Special Fraud Unit a leading national, professional and efficient fraud investigation unit that is dynamic, robust and efficient; one that never rests or abdicates its duties in investigating, prosecuting fraud perpetrators and recovery of proceeds of fraud.”

Verve issued 15 million payment cards in one year – CEO
Verve International has said it issued 15 million payment cards in a year, increasing the total number of issued cards to 50 million. The firm said in a release that it issued 35 million cards in Nigeria in March 2022 and had grown the figure by about 42 per cent this year. “13 years ago, we defied daunting odds and set out to chart a course for a brave new world of payments in Africa. Reps set to strengthen ties with Swiss Parliament
Abbas Tajudeen, revealed the plans of the 10th Assembly to enhance the existing ties between Nigeria and Switzerland in order to strengthen bilateral relationships between the two countries. He made this known during an interactive session with the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Nicholas Lang, in Abuja. The Swiss Ambassador, Mr Lang, emphasized the importance of Nigeria to Switzerland as its main provider of oil. He expressed the desire for stronger bilateral relations and invited the House of Representatives to Switzerland for exchanges with the Swiss Parliament. The Speaker expressed gratitude for the visit and looked forward to more mutually beneficial interactions with Switzerland.

Osun Federal University of Health Science holds maiden matriculation ceremony
No fewer than 526 newly admitted students of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State, held their matriculation ceremony on Tuesday with an appeal from the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Akeem Lasisi, that they should make a meaningful impact during their academic journey. The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted that out of the 7,421 candidates who applied to the university, only 526 were admitted. During his lecture, Prof. Oluwole Atoyebi urged the matriculated students to take their studies seriously and focus on their academics. He reminded them that they were admitted to the university as science students with a strong background in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. “These skills need to be further developed because, in secondary school, you complete the majority of your studying and assignments in class,” he said.

NGF: Tinubu urges Governors to nominate competent individuals for board appointments

I now understand how great my husband was — Late Lai Oso’s wife
Ambimbola Oso, the wife of the late Professor Lai Oso of the Department of Mass Communication, School of Communication, Lagos State University, said that death has made her realise the worth of her husband. Mrs Oso said she can now fully understand how great her late husband was, noting that he will be sorely missed. Professor Oso died in a fatal motor accident on June 24 at age 67 while returning from a conference in Abraka, Delta State. Mrs Oso said that since she lost her dad in 1982, the professor took up the responsibility of a father, husband, and friend, adding that they were always together as people refer to them as ‘five and six’. She described the professor as her mentor, a lover of God, someone who is selfless and kind-hearted to humanity and his extended family.
