Enugu residents groan as petrol price hits N650 per litre
Commuters and motorists in Enugu, Enugu State, have expressed sadness over the latest hike in the pump price of petrol from about N530 per liter to N650 and above. The areas visited included Awkunanaw, Abakpa Nike and Obiagu, where most of the service stations had few customers at the pumps. Mrs Okoli said, with the current economic reality, it would be hard for her to go to work daily. The residents urged the federal government to initiate urgent measures to reverse the trend and save the ordinary Nigerians from hardship.

The gradual death of the local government system
The other related result was that the regional governments gave their respective local governments the character considered appropriate to the region. All these committees including the Ahmed Talib Committee, the Oyeyipo Committee and the Dasuki Committee reports, advocated for one thing—direct funding for the local governments. In order to strike a balance between the demand by the Local Governments for financial autonomy through direct funding from the Federation Account and the need to ensure financial probity on the part of both the Local Governments and the State Governments, it is recommended that Section 162 (5) be amended so that all disbursements to the Local Government go to the State Local Government Joint Account as provided in Section 162(6). The gradual death of the Local Government System in Nigeria must be halted.

34 killed, 12 injured in Algeria bus crash
According to Algeria’s civil defense service, on Wednesday, a passenger bus accident in the country’s south resulted in the death of 34 people with 12 others sustaining injuries. The agency said the collision between the bus and a commercial vehicle caused a fire as rescue operations were ongoing. The civil defence agency said the bus was carrying passengers between Tamanrasset, deep in the Sahara desert, and Adrar, a town of about 2,000 residents to the northwest. According to a federal road safety agency, speed is the primary factor in collisions in the nation. According to Nacef Abdelhakim, head of road safety for Algeria, there were around 23,000 traffic incidents there in 2022, which resulted in 3,409 fatalities and more than 30,000 injuries.

15 die from electrocution in Northen India
Fifteen people have died after an electricity transformer exploded on the banks of the Alaknanda River in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. The state’s chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has ordered an inquiry into the incident, with police saying at least 15 people have also been severely injured in the accident. According to reports, the transformer exploded and electrified a bridge that spans the river near Pipalkoti village in Chamoli. “We got a call from the village that a watchman had died of electrocution. When the police went to check they found that 21 people had been electrocuted and severely injured.

Potholes on Oyo roads will disappear, Makinde assures
Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has issued a marching order to the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYSROMA) to fix all potholes on roads in the state. The governor asked residents of the state to look forward to the disappearance of potholes on their roads, in line with its earlier ‘zero potholes’ mandate. The people of Oyo State should expect to see most of the potholes disappear. Singapore passport has been ranked first and most powerful among 199 countries in the world, overtaking Japan which has remained in the first position for five years consecutively. This is according to the Henley Passport Index, which measures global travel freedom in terms of how much visa-free and visa-on-demand access to the world different citizens enjoy. As reported by CNN, Singapore citizens are able to visit 192 destinations visa-free out of 227 around the world, knocking down Japan to third place for summer, 2023. Citizens from that particular magnificent seven enjoy access to 189 destinations without needing a prior visa. The Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks 199 passports worldwide.
