Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. argued for limitations on free speech in the face of imminent lawless actions. But in the present, it has become a breeding ground for hate, a digital sewer where the vilest of ideas can spread almost unchecked. On the other side of the argument are those calling for free expression of all views, including hate speech and vitriol, which they claim serves as a digital catharsis preventing real-world violence. This insidious notion that allowing the free flow of venom online will somehow immunise our society against real-world malice is misguided. Hate speech can only be tamed by the responsible use of our freedom, not censorship.

Mohd Rasfan / AFP / GettyIn the split-second after taking a huge punch to the face, Canada’s Wyatt Sanford was photographed during a match against Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Abdullaev in the men’s 63.5-kilogram quarterfinal boxing event at the North Paris Arena, in Villepinte. These sorts of photos are fairly common in boxing coverage, but that doesn’t take away from their impact—as they reveal shockwaves rippling through a person’s surprisingly flexible face and hint at the pain and disorientation the boxer surely feels. Sanford went on to win the match, setting himself up for a medal. Previously:

IN the early 1960s, after Nigeria became independent under the British colonialist, the Nigeria political system was a tangible manifestation of the nation’s virtuous democracy. The political apologies of this period, operating in the Nigerian political milieu, have been trying to command loyalties as devoted and committed as the passionate followings of modern sports’ franchises, and the pageantry of political experience is often as exuberant as joyful musical performance. So too is political language. Even into the beginning of the second republic in the year 1979, Nigerian political systems have been factored as corrupt factions, as conspiratorial combinations of ambitious interests, indeed as usurping forces. And yet if the Nigerian political system has begun a metamorphosis, its idiom does not, and that it does not is one of the critical elements of systemic disturbance.
