At the instance of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday departed Abuja to represent Nigeria at the 2024 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum scheduled to be held in Davos, Switzerland. Nkwocha said this time, the VP will join other political and business leaders across the world at the week-long annual Forum to discuss global socio-economic and development issues. Shettima will also chair a roundtable dialogue on Nigeria’s economic path on the sidelines of the annual meeting. He will attend a special session dedicated to building trust in the global energy transition programme. The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after participating in the week-long event.

FOLLOWING a stinging rebuke of the quality of judgments coming from the Court of Appeal, by the Supreme Court, judicial stakeholders are expressing worries about the future of the apex court. But on Friday, while reversing the sacking of three governors by the Court of Appeal, the apex court descended on the lower court and berated the quality of its interpretation of the law in political cases. Despite repeated efforts, the Bar has been unsuccessful in getting senior lawyers appointed to superior courts of record, especially the Supreme Court. According to him, “I was the first, accompanied by my brother, Wole Olanipekun, to apply because we thought we were qualified to sit at the Supreme Court. This week may also present another potentially-embarrassing moment for the Court of Appeal as the Nasarawa gubernatorial dispute will be resolved by the apex court on Tuesday.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Usaini Gumel, has said that the command has recorded no crime associated with the outcome of the Supreme Court judgement that affirms Governor Abba Yusuf. This is just as he stated: “No shop or business premises vandalise before, during, or after the celebration in all parts of the state.”. Disclosing this on Saturday while speaking with the press in Kano, Mrhour’s Gumel added that reports from the 44 local government areas of the state indicated that the celebration went on peacefully, without threat to lives and properties, and with overall coexistence. He, however, called on the residents to continue to support the efforts of the command by providing useful and timely information that would assist in preventing crime and apprehending criminal elements. He said that the security measures already in place would enable residents to move on with their legitimate businesses without any hindrance.

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Saturday, thronged the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, to welcome him on his return to the state after the Supreme Court judgment which validated his election. The Supreme Court affirmed the election of the governor on Friday. From the airport, the governor embarked on a rally around some major roads within the metropolis. From there, he went through Ran Road to the Central Market roundabout, through the Emir’s Place to the Ministry of Education roundabout. After the rally, the governor went to the Government House where a reception was held in his honour.

A housewife, Sa’adatu Ayuba, has urged a Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court, to dissolve her 27-year-old marriage to her husband, Jalija for alleged impotence. The petitioner got married to Jalija in accordance with Islamic law in 1997 and was blessed with five children ages 25, 22, 14, nine and seven. “I have been having misunderstandings with my husband for the past two years because he has a girlfriend. He added that he had been playing his role as a husband towards the petitioner. She said that she was not aware that her husband got married to the woman.

The Student Christian Movement of Nigeria has condemned the continuous killings by gunmen in various communities in Plateau State and other parts of the country. On Christmas Eve, gunmen attacked 25 communities in three local government areas of Plateau State, killing over 150 people and razing about 221 houses. The statement read, “In a resolute response to the recent atrocities against some communities in Plateau State, the SCM of Nigeria strongly condemns the inhumane acts perpetrated in various regions. The attacks left property worth millions of naira destroyed, compounding the challenges faced by the affected communities. “The SCM of Nigeria expresses solidarity with the affected communities and extends heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones.

An Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dissolved a seven-year-old marriage between a woman, Ramatu Ahmed and her husband, Yahaya Salihu on the grounds of lack of love. The judge, Mohammad Wakili dissolved their marriage according to Islamic Laws, following Ramatu prayer for divorce. Wakili also ordered Ramatu to observe “Iddah”, which is an observation period of three months after the judgment before contracting another marriage. She said they had been experiencing crises in their marriage for almost six years and has grown tired of the situation. In his response, Yahaya stated that he no longer loved Ramatu and consented to the divorce.
