INEC begins accreditation of observers for February 3 by-elections
INEC said this in a notice issued by its acting Director, Electoral Party Monitoring, Hauwa Habib, in Abuja on Thursday. “The list of successful observer groups approved for accreditation will subsequently be published on the commission’s website and EPM observer’s WhatsApp platform,” Habib said. She added that INEC is conducting the by-election and re-run election stemming from the 2023 general elections as directed by various election petition appeal tribunals. “Both categories of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday February 3,” Habib added. PUNCH Online reports that INEC will conduct reruns and bye-elections across the country in February 2024 to fill existing vacancies in the state and federal legislatures.

WHO says COVID-19 remains major threat
The World Health Organisation, on Wednesday, warned that the Coronavirus disease remains a major threat despite partially passing under the radar, adding that almost 10,000 COVID-19 deaths were reported in December. “Although COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the virus is still circulating, changing and killing,” the UN health agency’s chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said. Besides the near 10,000 deaths reported to the WHO last month, there was a 42 per cent increase in hospitalisations and a 62 per cent increase in intensive care unit admissions, compared with November. However, the figures are based on data from less than 50 countries — mostly in Europe and the Americas, Tedros said. Supreme Court reserves judgment in PDP, APC’s appeal against Otti’s election
The Supreme Court on Wednesday, reserved judgment in the appeals brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their governorship candidates against the election of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. The five-member panel of Justices of the apex court reserved judgment to a date that will be communicated to parties after the adoption of all briefs filed in the matter. The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos had, in a unanimous decision in December last year, upheld the victory of Otti at the polls, saying that it conformed with the provisions of the Electoral Act. Plant-based diets pack an antiviral punch against COVID-19
A predominantly plant-based or vegetarian diet is linked to 39% lower odds of COVID-19 infection, finds research published in the open access journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health. Those who reported following predominantly plant-based or vegetarian diets routinely ate more vegetables, legumes, and nuts, and less/no dairy and meat. And the prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher among the omnivores-;all factors associated with higher COVID-19 infection risk and more severe symptoms/complications. The omnivores had a significantly higher reported incidence of COVID-19 than the plant-based dietary groups: 52% vs 40%. "Plant-based dietary patterns are rich in antioxidants, phytosterols and polyphenols, which positively affect several cell types implicated in the immune function and exhibit direct antiviral properties," they write.
