CCTV footage showed two young boys playing in a residential area before noticing a Samoyed in a dog cage. One of the boys lit a firework and dropped it into the cage, which shortly went up in flames. The incident sparked public outrage online, with Internet users strongly condemning the boys’ actions. However, the boys’ parents attempted to settle the matter privately by offering 6,000 yuan (RM3,400), saying that it was “only a dog”. Police initially suspected that old newspapers used to wrap the cabbage may have been exposed to rat poison.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's rice self-sufficiency level remains at about 52% and has yet to show any increase due to a mix of structural constraints and climate-related pressures, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. He said padi yields could not be increased without proper infrastructure, especially irrigation. Malaysia's rice self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) stood at about 52.9% in 2024, still well below the government's target of 75% by 2025 and 80% by 2030 under the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030. To address this, the government will tighten quality control and grading, and Mardi has developed technology to detect and manage rice mixing. Based on a six-month study, the ministry found that about 15% of Malaysians need rice priced at around RM26 for a 10kg bag.

The Fed’s favoured measure of inflation – core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices – is creeping higher again, and several alternative gauges of retail prices also show some heat building as 2026 is getting underway. Not only is 3% core inflation a full point above the Fed’s inflation target, but it’s going in the wrong direction. According to UBS, online retail prices captured by Adobe’s Digital Price Index rose in January by the most in the series’ 12-year history. UBS economist Alan Detmeister also pointed out that the online price index led a similar basket of the consumer price index both up and down during the pandemic period and thus bears close watching. What’s more, US businesses are also seeing input price growth pick up pace this year.
