KUALA LUMPUR: Regulations barring foreigners from purchasing subsidised packaged cooking oil are expected to take effect on March 1, says Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. Armizan said the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme System (eCOSS), which digitally records data across the entire distribution chain, allows the government to effectively enforce the ban. Streamline access: Armizan (pic, below) says eCOSS will be integrated with the MyKasih platform, allowing purchases of subsidised packaged cooking oil via MyKad, similar to the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah programme. The system tracks purchases and transactions to curb long-standing leakages caused by diversion and smuggling of subsidised cooking oil. He said the QR code embedded in the newer MyKad could also serve as a verification mechanism for subsidised cooking oil purchases.

Said Chin Chai: "To my understanding, the players who have been representing Putrajaya previously can continue to play for the state. A parent of one of the players denied entry in the tournament said that all 16 players have been representing Putrajaya for at least two years. "Out of the 16 players, 14 are schooling in Selangor, one in Kuala Lumpur and one more in Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS)," said the parent who wished to remain anonymous. "Only at the end of last year, BAM sent us a letter stipulating that the players must represent the state where they are schooling. The 16 players are now hoping that BAM will overturn the decision and allow them to compete in the tournament.

Most traders and analysts still see production exceeding consumption globally, but not where it’s most visible: Western storage hubs. In December, more than 13 million barrels a day of crude arrived on China’s shores, the most on record, according to government data. “Many have been waiting for the sell off and did not see strong demand from India and China.”The conundrum faced by oil markets perhaps shows up best in the amount of crude oil sailing on tankers at sea. Currently, it’s about 200 million barrels higher than it was a year ago, an increase that would normally lead to pressure on crude prices. Winter Storm Fern shut in close to 2 million barrels a day of American oil production at its peak, Energy Aspects estimates and another cold snap is on its way to the US.

WASHINGTON (Jan 30): US producer prices increased more than expected in December, with businesses appearing to pass on higher costs from import tariffs, suggesting inflation could pick up in the months ahead. Last month's larger-than-expected rise in producer prices was led by a 0.7% increase in services. A 1.7% jump in margins for final demand trade services, which measures changes in margins received by wholesalers and retailers, accounted for two-thirds of the increase in services. Businesses had been absorbing some of President Donald Trump's sweeping import tariffs, preventing a sharp increase in inflation. Producer goods prices were unchanged in December.

(Jan 30): China Vanke Co reported its losses widened by two-thirds to a record last year, citing a sharp decline in its property developments and additional provisions. The troubled developer’s preliminary net loss in 2025 bloated to about 82 billion yuan (RM46.31 billion), compared with 49.5 billion yuan the previous year, according to a filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange on Friday. “The scale of settlement for real estate development projects declined significantly, and gross profit margins remained low,” the company said in the filing. The partial repayments amount to 2.5 billion yuan, plus a further 413 million yuan due on Friday on a separate security, according to Bloomberg calculations based on prior filings. But on Friday, Vanke shares fell 5.9% to HK$3.80 (RM1.91) in Hong Kong, extending their losses in the past year to more than 30%.

(Jan 30): German inflation accelerated slightly after Europe’s largest economy recorded surprisingly strong expansion at the end of last year. Consumer prices rose an annual 2.1% in January — up from 2% in December — the statistics office said on Friday. The report comes less than a week before the European Central Bank (ECB) meets for the first time this year. Despite still-elevated uncertainty over trade and Russia’s war in Ukraine, euro-area inflation is settling at 2%. Expectations among consumers for price gains over the next 12 months held steady in December, the ECB said earlier on Friday.

SEOUL: South Korea on Thursday (Jan 29) passed a series of revised laws aimed at banning ticket scalping in the performance and sports sectors and curbing the illegal distribution of South Korean content. The government estimates that illegal distribution causes more than 4 trillion won in annual losses to the South Korean content industry. Most provisions of the revised Copyright Act will enter into force six months after promulgation, while emergency site-blocking measures will be implemented earlier, after three months. All ticket scalping banned, platform responsibility expandedAmendments to the Performance Act and National Sports Promotion Act introduce a sweeping ban on all forms of ticket scalping, regardless of whether automated programs, or “macros”, are used. “They will play a significant role in eliminating illegal content distribution and ticket scalping, both of which undermine the sustainable growth of K-culture and its ecosystem.” - The Korea Herald/ANN

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will implement the New Incentive Framework (NIF) effective March 1, 2026, beginning with the manufacturing sector and followed by the services sector in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The implementation of this new framework represents a significant strategic policy shift in Malaysia’s investment incentive landscape, aimed at ensuring the country remains competitive, sustainable, and resilient in the face of global economic challenges. In tandem with the implementation of the NIF, MITI said the government will no longer accept new incentive applications for manufacturing sector under the Promotion of Investments Act 1986 (PIA 1986). The final deadline for the submission of incentive applications under the PIA 1986 for the manufacturing sector is on Feb 28, 2026 at 3 pm. "The NIF Implementation Guidelines outline the eligibility criteria, NIA Scorecard assessment parameters, category of incentive, as well as the application and evaluation processes," it said.
