EU navies should stay parked off the Libyan coast for years to come, military advisors say, renewing concern on "vile" conditions for refugees. And Frontex works hand-in-glove with the Libyan coast guard, which stops boats in Libyan waters, but which has a grim record on human rights. The EU memo mentioned "concern" for the refugees' "situation". The EU memo admitted Irini's efforts to improve Libyan coast guard standards had failed. If Turkish ships could come and go while EU patrols stopped others, it would pose questions on "the issue of impartiality and therefore on the effectiveness of the operation," the EU memo said.

Mali has received more warplanes and helicopters from Russia, an AFP correspondent noted, the latest in a series of deliveries from its new top military and political ally. AFP counted eight planes and two helicopters at a ceremony on Thursday attended by Russian ambassador Igor Gromyko and the head of Mali’s junta, Colonel Assimi Goita. Mali’s current Air Force Chief General Alou Boi Diarra hailed the latest deliveries as the latest stage in the “unprecedented” modernisation of the country’s forces. Mali’s military said the shipment included Sukhoi Su-25 attack planes designed to support ground troops; and the Czech-designed Albatros L-39. Bamako also received Mi-8s, a Soviet-designed Russian transport helicopter that, as well as transporting troops and equipment, can be fitted with weapons to defend ground troops.

The beginning of the war on terror at the turn of the century coincided with the creation of new euphemisms to describe things that were already well defined. Now many of these same voices are indignant when Russia commits similar war crimes in Ukraine. One term that has established itself in the talking points of those who promote militarism throughout the world is ‘collateral damage’. Today we are seeing collateral damage from the war in Ukraine in many poorer countries that relied on food and fertilizer from both it and the Russian aggressors. In doing so, they sow the seeds of future tragedies, most of them unintended.

The widespread use of the English language in bilingual Malta can sometimes hinder migrants in their quest to learn Maltese. For these migrants, English makes communicating in Maltese easier without the pressure of having to exclusively communicate in one language to be understood. The study is based on interviews with 15 such non-EU migrants following the ‘I Belong’ Maltese-language integration programme. But speaking Maltese is also seen as a gateway to the shared cultural experience of their work colleagues. Sonja, who works with mostly Maltese colleagues, shared an anecdote related to the popularity of the Maltese television series “L-Għarusa” at work.

An Italian Coast Guard official said that 2022 witnessed the arrival of 53,000 illegal immigrants via the Mediterranean from Libya, which was an increase of 70%. The official said most of the immigrants set off from the western region of Libya. He indicated that 105,000 immigrants arrived by sea in 2022, an increase of 56% compared to the previous year, adding that 1,401 of them set off from Algeria and 32,000 from Tunisia, which was an increase of 60%. According to the Italian official, there are two lines of immigrants' influx from Libya: the Tripolitania region: 33,000 immigrants departed from there, and the Cyrenaica region, from which 20,000 migrants departed, in addition to the eastern Mediterranean route (Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria) that saw the arrival of 17,000 immigrants. Tunisia announced Wednesday that President Kais Saied met with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and discussed the issue of illegal immigration, emphasizing the common conviction of the two countries regarding the need to adopt a comprehensive approach to this matter that goes beyond the security dimension, addresses its deep causes, and provides mechanisms to deal with it.

EventArmed clashes broke out between two militias aligned with the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) at Tripoli International Airport (TIP), located in the Qaser Bin Ghashir area about 34 km (21 miles) south of Tripoli, around 00:30 early Jan. 19. Reports indicate that the fighting broke out after one militia refused to hand over airport security to another. TIP is not an operational airport, and armed clashes that occur there will likely have no impact on air travel. Heightened security measures will likely be maintained around TIP and could result in localized ground transport disruptions through Jan. 19. Further clashes between GNU-aligned militias cannot be ruled out.

A 10-year-old boy has died after a remnant of war exploded on a farm in Qasr Bin Ghashir south of Tripoli. The Security Directorate of the Four Districts said it received a call on Monday reporting the sound of an explosion in the area. The blast killed 10-year-old Abdul Moez Masoud Al-Tir Oqab from the Radd Al-Zawiya neighbourhood near Al-Ittihad Company. The authority said investigations into the cause of the blast are ongoing. A report by Human Rights Watch in April last year confirmed the death of at least 130 people, mostly civilians, due to landmines and unexploded ordnance left over from heavy fighting in 2020.

Apple’s extended reality (XR) product lineup faces additional setbacks after reports revealed it indefinitely postponed augmented reality (AR) smart glasses. Apple stated the smart glasses face technical issues, forcing Apple to delay the launch of the device until further notice. With its AR smart glasses indefinitely on hold, Apple must now innovate its hardware further with two devices — its enterprise and consumer XR headsets. This will provide access to the entire AR smart glasses industry to manufacture and launch their own devices, significantly increasing competition for Apple. The US tech giant must rethink how it will refine its AR smart glasses.
