CAIRO (AP) — Italy’s chief diplomat held talks Sunday with Egyptian and Arab League officials in Cairo that focused on regional security and the conflict in neighboring Libya, as well as sensitive bilateral issues. “I asked for and received assurances for strong cooperation on the Regeni and Zaki cases,” Tajani wrote on Twitter. The Regeni case roiled Cairo’s relations with Rome, with Regeni’s family and Italian authorities accusing Egyptian security forces of torturing and killing him. “The Regeni trial is blocked. But in 2022 Egyptian migrants were among the top nationalities arriving to European shores mainly by traveling first through neighboring Libya before taking perilous sea voyages.

Five of the 22 member states of the Arab League sent their foreign ministers to the periodic, consultative meeting Sunday. They included the chief diplomats of neighboring Algeria and Tunisia, local media reported. The foreign ministers of Gulf monarchies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also did not attend. The snub underlines Arab divisions over the Tripoli-based government, whose legitimacy is contested by a rival administration in the war-scarred country's east. Regional heavyweights Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were not represented at all at the gathering -- a preparatory session ahead of a foreign ministers' meeting in Cairo. Four members sent lower-ranking ministers or ambassadors while Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit was also absent. Najla al-Mangoush, foreign minister in the Tripoli-based administration, condemned what she called "attempts by certain sides to crush Libyans' desire to transform Arab solidarity into a reality". The resulting power grab gave rise to myriad home-grown militias and prompted interventions by Arab powers as well as Turkey, Russia and Western states.

Libya coach Corentin Martins says his side leaves the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a lot of regrets, despite their consolatory win against Ethiopia. Libya came from behind to beat the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia 3-1 in Annaba on Saturday to finish their Group A campaign. The win was not enough for Corentin Martins' side to reach the quarter-finals because they suffered defeats in the other two group games. Libya won the TotalEnergies African Nations championship in 2014, and finished fourth in Morocco 2018. Leaving Algeria 2022 in the group stage, means the Mediterranean Knights have failed to go pass this stage for the third time in five editions.
