SALAYEA TOWN Lofa County – In early June, villagers seized a team of miners and their equipment for operating in the Salayea Community Forest without their consent and sued them. The Community Rights Law of 2009 with Respect to Forest Lands, empowers rural people, who were marginalized for decades. LawsuitsMining in community forests has led to several lawsuits countrywide in the last five years. In the first case, Korninga B Community Forest in Gbarpolu, 100 kilometers west of Salayea, locals sued Bea Mountain company for unauthorized entry into the community forest. Both steep community forests and two others—Gba and Zor—receive support from ArcelorMittal Liberia and USAID.

The Armed Forces of Liberia, in partnership with the U.S. Government, unveiled a new tuberculosis (TB) clinic at 14 Military Hospital in Dauzon, Liberia, that will advance Liberia’s fight against TB in the military and civilian population. The new clinic reaffirms the U.S. government’s longstanding commitment to support Liberia’s public health infrastructure. AmbassadorMark C. Toner opened the new TB clinic at a ceremony on November 12. The U.S. has provided substantial support to the 14 Military Hospital since the facility opened in September 2021, including skilled mentors, advanced training, and additional resources. AFL Maj. Albertha Clark, 14 Military Hospital commander, praised the U.S. government’s ongoing support.

The Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Michael Langley, has underscored the deepening military and diplomatic partnership between the U.S. and Liberia. During a press conference on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, General Langley expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to visit Liberia, his first trip to the country. In line with the U.S.-Africa partnership, Langley also discussed upcoming plans for enhanced cooperation between the U.S. and Liberia. "These teams will help assess the security challenges Liberia faces, both regionally and locally, and look at them through different domains, including border security and maritime security," Langley explained. Speaker Koffa and his supporters refused to bow to the so-called Majority Bloc citing Article 33 of the Liberian Constitution. Article 33 of the Liberian Constitution states that a simple majority of each House of the Liberian Legislature constitutes a quorum for conducting business. The conference followed a stay order issued by Justice Gbeissy, aimed at halting efforts by the “majority bloc” to remove House Speaker Cllr. They indicated the alleged violations of Articles 31 and 49 of the Liberian Constitution, asserting that the majority bloc failed to follow proper due process in their efforts. The lawyer of the So-called bloc acknowledged this directive, indicating a willingness to compel his clients “majority bloc to return to session under the speakership of” Jonathan Fonati Koffa.
