[Jonah Onyango, Standard]Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has criticised the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) for "retreating to the sidelines" when called upon to advise the government. He argued that beyond criticism, the Law Society has a statutory responsibility to advise the government and contribute expertise when invited. “Don’t make the Law Society of Kenya look like an NGO,” he said. “When you raise issues of police brutality and governance, and we ask you to come and help in those spaces, don’t run away,” Murkomen said. “There must be people who raise serious issues of governance, and when they do, I don’t take offence,” Murkomen said.

(Xinhua/Wale Salau)A top commander of the Boko Haram terror group and 10 other terrorists were killed during a night raid in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, which has long been plagued by insurgency, the military said in a statement on Sunday. The Boko Haram commander, identified as Abu Khalid, was the second-in-command of the terror group at the Sambisa Forest and "a key figure within the terrorist hierarchy, coordinating operations and logistics in the Sambisa axis," according to the statement. Boko Haram and ISWAP have been collaborating in an attempt to establish an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria. The conflict has since expanded to include a faction aligned with the Islamic State group, known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Taiwo Adebayo, a Boko Haram researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said the military initiated a new offensive last month, taking the fight directly to militant hideouts.

“We as the ODM Party have decided to give our party leader, Oburu Oginga, the mandate and space to speak with other parties that have the same manifesto as ours, starting with the United Democratic Alliance. We are heading in the direction that our former party leader Raila Odinga was taking us,” she said. On January 14, United Democratic Alliance National Executive Committee formally mandated party leader President Ruto to initiate structured coalition negotiations with ODM ahead of the 2027 general elections. Following that acknowledgement, the NEC resolved to place the responsibility of steering the engagement on the party leader. “The NEC mandated the UDA party leader to establish mechanisms for structured engagement with the ODM party to achieve the desired outcome,” the communiqué said, effectively authorising President Ruto to lead talks aimed at shaping a pre-election coalition framework.

The sudden shutdown of KOKO Networks sent shockwaves across Kenya, catching both employees and customers completely off guard. By encouraging households to switch from charcoal or kerosene to bioethanol, KOKO reduced carbon emissions and earned carbon credits for every tonne of emissions avoided. The letter allowed KOKO to sell all carbon credits generated by its operations on international markets. Ultimately, the conclusion was that without government approval to sell carbon credits, the business was no longer viable. KOKO’s collapse also highlights the vulnerabilities facing climate-dependent business models in emerging markets, particularly those reliant on regulatory approvals and international carbon markets.
