Chelsea hold on to beat Brighton despite playing second half with 10 menBy Robert O'Connor, PAChelsea played the entirety of the second half with 10 men as they clung on to defeat Brighton 3-2 after a tense finale at Stamford Bridge. Referee Craig Pawson shows a red card to Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher (John Walton/PA) Photo by John WaltonInstead, it was Chelsea that reasserted their charge, Fernandez converting from the spot midway through the second half after the excellent Mykhailo Mudryk had been fouled. Roberto De Zerbi gambled, making four substitutions in one swoop, whilst Pochettino looked to his depleted bench and prepared Palmer. Then at the death, Pawson was called pitchside once more to adjudicate on handball against Colwill. The evidence seemed to show the ball strike the defender’s face, as Stamford Bridge breathed a sigh of collective relief.

A recent motion tabled by Fianna Fáil Senator Malcolm Byrne called for the Electoral Commission to create a strategy to tackle the misuse of artificial intelligence in political campaigning. Where that has come to the fore is social media and we’re seeing what I would call disasters of social media. What happens to information when they upload it to social media, how your data is aggregated, how often you’re caught by surveillance systems. Dr O’Sullivan said the Government and the Electoral Commission should try to take advantage of this proximity to leading tech companies. Dr O’Sullivan also fears that the talk around AI and deepfakes will lead to people becoming more sceptical about elections.

The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, thinks that insisting that daytrippers cough up €5 for the privilege of entering the city on certain dates next year is going to have them all heading to Verona or Padua instead. Is he for real? Venice, a city with which I have enjoyed a 30-year love affair, is nowadays totally overrun with daytrippers. They clamber off the buses in Piazzale Roma at the top of the Grand Canal or step out of the train station just a few hundred metres further down that famous waterway with not a suitcase in sight between the lot of them.

Dublin rioters have pushed people away from the untried and untested towards the status quoIt was inevitable there would be political consequences from the Dublin riots, which are still being played out this week, with a confidence motion in the justice minister. Nobody knew for sure what the impact would be, other than that there would be an impact — and what an impact there has been, according to today’s Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks opinion poll.
