Minister Hackett welcomes new National Biodiversity Action PlanMinister Pippa Hackett has welcomed the new National Biodiversity Action Plan (NBAP) which was launched by Minister Malcolm Noonan today (Thursday) in Glasnevin, Dublin. I was determined that this National Biodiversity Action Plan would be an ‘impact plan’ and, combined with the people power I’ve encountered on my travels, the new statutory footing for the NBAP and the €3.15bn Climate and Nature Fund, I believe that it will be. This is Ireland’s fourth National Biodiversity Action Plan and the first to be published on a Statutory basis, under the Wildlife Amendment Act 2023. Following a phase of renewal, the National Parks and Wildlife Service is ready to lead on the ambition of the Plan. Millions of years of evolution are at stake.”The development of the National Biodiversity Action Plan has been led by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS ) at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in collaboration with key stakeholders across government and wider society.

Ofcom said Royal Mail could make significant savings - up to £200million - by cutting its delivery days from six to five days a week. Why does Royal Mail want to scrap Saturday post? Royal Mail hiked the price of first class stamps twice last year, blaming cost pressuresLast April, Royal Mail hiked the price of first class stamps from 95p to £1.10, while second class stamps rose by 10 per cent, from 68p to 75p. Royal Mail has blamed the price hikes on increasing cost pressures and its USO, and the regulator seems to support this. In 2022/23, Royal Mail delivered just 73.7 per cent of first-class mail on time, and 90.7 per cent of second-class mail on time.

Aired last week on Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE, The Lasts Priests in Ireland was followed by The Last Nuns in Ireland a few days later. Her selection of interviewees is more representative of the Church, of the work and the reality of nuns in Ireland. The first step would be choosing presenters who have a genuine interest in priests, nuns, religion and the Faith, and also who are not blatantly prejudiced by previous experiences. The second step would be to seek out a representative sample of everyday priests and nuns, rather than those with peripheral and esoteric perspectives. There is no one fighting for Irish farming anymore, Independent Ireland co-founder and Cork south west TD Michael Collins has said. The direction came from Europe, yes, but the minister wasn’t out there fighting, there’s no-one fighting for Irish farming anymore. We can provide that platform, we are Independent Ireland, we’re both urban and rural. Independent Ireland is an unusual structure for an Irish political party. It isn’t just a matter of being yes-boys.”“When you come to Independent Ireland, you agree the principles before you sign up,” added O’Donoghue.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said no one should conflate levels of crime and violence with the arrival of migrants into Ireland. The challenge is causing political and social stresses, bringing out both the best and worst of our country. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has now appealed to the Dáil for “a bit of help” to prevent Ireland being angrily divided over the migrant question. Mr Varadkar said: “I think to connect that to a debate about international protection of migration is really wrong. To conflate crime, and violence against women in particular, with migration I think is profoundly wrong and profoundly dangerous.”He is correct.

A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane was seen on video crashing in the Belgorod region, close to the border with Ukraine. Video: XKyiv sources have cast doubt on Moscow’s claim that Ukraine killed 65 of its own soldiers by shooting down a Russian military transport plane that was taking them to a prisoner exchange. Russia’s defence ministry said the plane was shot down by missiles launched from the neighbouring Kharkiv region in Ukraine, in a “terrorist act” that killed all 74 people on board – nine Russian crew members and soldiers, and 65 Ukrainian prisoners. “The Ukrainian leadership was well aware that, in accordance with established practice, Ukrainian servicemen would be transported by military transport aircraft to the Belgorod airfield today to be exchanged,” the ministry said in a statement. Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence agency said after the plane crash that a prisoner exchange planned for Wednesday would not take place.
