Editorial: We must manage immigration issue better, but linking it to crime and violence is wrong


Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said no one should conflate levels of crime and violence with the arrival of migrants into Ireland. The challenge is causing political and social stresses, bringing out both the best and worst of our country. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has now appealed to the Dáil for “a bit of help” to prevent Ireland being angrily divided over the migrant question. Mr Varadkar said: “I think to connect that to a debate about international protection of migration is really wrong. To conflate crime, and violence against women in particular, with migration I think is profoundly wrong and profoundly dangerous.”He is correct.
