Ukraine arrests security staff on suspicion of being members of Russian spy network as Avdiivka battle intensifies
Head of security services of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk: 'Today, we are not just building a renewed SBU but protecting democratic values, including freedom of speech and media independence. Ukraine’s SBU security service said an employee of one of its regional departments was among those held, along with former officials from Kyiv’s GUR military intelligence agency and foreign intelligence service. The spy network was allegedly co-ordinated by a member of Russia’s FSB security service in Crimea, which the Kremlin annexed in 2014. “According to the investigation, the FSB recruited members of the group using, among other things, threats to kill their families. In addition, for each completed task, the perpetrators received funds from the Russian Federation,” the SBU said.

Until now, the police, banks, insurance providers and fraud charities have had their own strategies and messaging to warn households. Officials have admitted this has caused 'confusion' about what to do when people fall victim to scams. Last May, the official Fraud Strategy warned: 'People do not always protect themselves and reporting rates remain low.' From February 12, government departments and businesses will have to unite behind 'clear, technically accurate and timely messaging' on how people can protect themselves from scams and report an incident when it happens.

The hospital with the highest number of patients on trolleys is University Hospital Limerick, with 138 patients waiting for beds. Sixty-five patients are on trolleys in the emergency department, with 75 patients on trolleys elsewhere in the hospital. Fifty-eight patients in Cork University Hospital are on trolleys, with 50 of those in the Emergency Department. In St Vincent's University Hospital, there are 44 people waiting on trolleys, with all patients in the Emergency Department.

Inland Fisheries launches recruitment drive
Inland Fisheries Ireland(IFI) has launched a new national recruitment drive to hire 52 temporary staff. IFI’s Seasonal Fisheries Officers and Seasonal Fisheries Assistants are to be deployed across 15 counties from April to September. Starting salaries of €29,053, per annum pro rata, are on offer, and Fisheries Officers can also earn up to €3,639 extra via an unsocial hours allowance. Barry Fox, Head of Operations at IFI, commented: “As a key State environmental agency, enforcement of the law regarding illegal fishing, pollution, and habitat destruction, are a key focus for Inland Fisheries Ireland. “We are seeking male and female Seasonal Fisheries Officers from diverse backgrounds for a six-month period.

Creative Places, Edenderry is excited to be running their first 'Arts Collective Day' this Saturday, February 10 at The Parish Centre, Edenderry from 10am to 4pm. There will be opportunities to take part in four different workshops; Creative Crafts with Jenny Bergin, Dance workshops with Yolanda Rodriguez from Retox Dance, Playwriting with John Gorgan or Music with Angi Wards. BP profits beat forecasts despite lower energy prices as it maintains green spending
BP has followed rival Shell in revealing a sharp fall in profits in 2023, reflecting a significant drop in oil and gas prices. It also achieved a better-than-expected performance in the final three months of 2023, posting underlying profits of $3billion (£2.4billion) against analyst forecasts of $2.8billion (£2.2billion). Under previous boss Looney, BP rowed back on plans to cut oil and gas output amid concerns about energy security and affordability. The London-based group expects underlying oil and gas production to rise this year but gas and low-carbon energy output to decline. Like BP, Shell announced a dividend uplift last week despite its annual profits also plunging due to tumbling petroleum and gas prices.

Jerry Flannery to join Rassie Erasmus’s new South Africa coaching ticket
The 45-year-old Flannery worked under Erasmus at Munster in 2016 and 2017 as scrum, lineout and subsequently forwards coach. He joined the London club in 2020 and was part of the coaching team when they won a league title a year later. Flannery said in a statement: “I have loved my time at Harlequins working alongside a talented young group of coaches and players. He has also coached Super Rugby side Otago Highlanders and previously played in South Africa for the Stormers and Sharks. “With the coaching team finalised, we can now focus on planning for the season and the next few years.”Former referee Jaco Peyper, who retired last month, will join the team management to assist with interpreting the laws of the game.

Survey finds 24% of all Irish six-year olds have a smartphoneWith the latest parenting survey revealing the shocking statistic that almost a quarter of all six-year olds now have their own smartphone, an online safety parental awareness campaign has been launched by CybersafeKids. Accessing disturbing content relating to self-harming, (25%) and addiction to social media (16%) were also cited by parents as concerns. Only 28% of parents are using parental controls to protect their children, with the data showing that 24% of children as young as six own a smartphone. 80% of parents of children aged eleven with smartphones said their child's internet access is only "sometimes or never" supervised. To support parents, CyberSafeKids' campaign 'Same Rules Apply' highlights the need to approach parenting children online in the same way that we approach parenting them offline - emphasising that the same parenting rules should be applied to both worlds.
