Vapes, gin and air fryers among items added to 'national basket' to calculate inflationMuireann DuffyLandline telephones, digital cameras and Swiss rolls are no longer commonly purchased items among Irish households, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has decided, removing them from the 'national basket' used to calculate inflation. The increase in the prices of those goods and services is how inflation is measured, and shows how consumers' purchasing power decreases due to inflation. As part of the latest update to the national basket, landline telephones, digital cameras, Swiss rolls, and nightclub admissions were some of the items removed, marking them as purchases of days gone by. In their place, disposable e-cigarettes, smart watches, gin, air fryers, and milk and meat substitutes were added. The CSO said there are now 612 goods and services monitored to calculate the State's CPI.

Coláiste Bhaile Chláir’s attempts to join St. Jarlath’s, Tuam CBS (later St. Pat’s) and St. Mary’s on the province’s A roll of honour came unstuck against a St. Gerald’s, Castlebar outfit that proved effective front-runners from the opening quarter. Dunmore Community School and St. Cuan’s College, Castleblakeney enjoyed better days and will go forward to represent Connacht in the coming weeks after their successes in B and D deciders, respectively. Dunmore’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric with provincial silverware won at D, C and now B level since 2020. St. Cuan’s, meanwhile, simply refused to be beaten and came from behind at the end of both normal and extra-time before a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Roscommon Community School.

Inflation falls to 4.1% in year to January
Kenneth FoxThe Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 4.1 per cent in the year to January, down from an annual increase of 4.6 per cent in the 12 months to December 2023. Excluding energy and unprocessed food, the CPI rose by 5.3 per cent in the 12 months to January 2024. The divisions with the largest increases in the 12 months to January 2024 were recreation & culture (+9.3 per cent) and restaurants & hotels (+7.2 per cent). The only division to record a decline when compared to January 2023 was clothing and footwear (-1.3 per cent). The divisions with the largest decreases in the month were clothing and footwear (-10.1 per cent) and transport (-4.1 per cent).

For immoderate me, “www” meant work, wine and women. So at the age of 74 (and counting), I work a 12-14 hour day, because the alternative would be drink. I was told by a Greek doctor: “If you drink, your life expectancy is between one day and six months – you choose.” It was the best advice I ever got, because it was a gun to the head. The day my granddaughter was stillborn, or the day my closest friend told me his cancer was terminal, were times when the urge to drink was almost inescapable. To which we could add “dipsofilia” (someone who loves drink), which is where I would place myself on the spectrum.
