Protest to be held at Leinster House over costs faced by shops and restaurantsBy Gráinne Ní Aodha, PABusinesses from the hospitality and retail sectors will march to Leinster House on Tuesday to highlight the high costs facing small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Former minister and broadcaster Ivan Yates will speak at the demonstration, organised by the Restaurants Association of Ireland and the Vintners Federation of Ireland. “Unfortunately, the lack of support for hospitality and small businesses in Budget 2025 made this demonstration inevitable. He said income tax changes would help SME employees and their customers, but added that the government will “continue to engage” with the sector. “It contains the grant of up to €4,000 to help businesses later on in the year with the cost of energy and the cost of doing business.

Chris Bates, research and analytics director at clinical software firm TPP, said his company’s technology could save the cash-strapped NHS a fortune. No-shows account for more than a million missed GP appointments every month – equal to one in 20 scheduled consultations. Now Leeds-based TPP has developed an AI tool that predicts which patients are most likely not to turn up to their appointments. Young men from a lower socio-economic background in and around cities are most likely to miss GP appointments, Bates told the Mail. A successful trial in Norfolk of the AI technology is being rolled out across the country.

Concerns about cycle parking because they might encourage people to bring more cycles into the city, encouraging more crime. Hitting back Police and Crime Commissioner Mr Barber replied: "Extraordinary that anyone would object to the police calling for crime prevention measures to STOP people becoming victims of crime! This literally says that if the plans go ahead they should be designed with crime prevention in mind. Surely everyone would want new infrastructure to come with crime prevention at its heart." Midlands-based 'See Her Elected' receives over €170k in funding to support work in rural areasFunding of €171,162 was recently announced for the Midlands-based See Her Elected (SHE) in support of their work in supporting and encouraging the participation of women from rural Ireland in local politics. Minister of State for Planning and Local Government Alan Dillon allocated the funding to Longford Women’s Link, which is the parent organisation of SHE. Announcing the funding, the minister said: “The outcome of the local elections in June of this year was encouraging in terms of the participation of women in local government. “The 247 women councillors elected make up 26% of councillors overall – the highest proportion of women elected to local government in the history of the state. The SHE team contributed enormously to the recent successes at local level, with almost 40% of female candidates in this year’s local elections having received support from the organisation.

Sonya McLeanA Wicklow man who deliberately groomed a young teenager almost 25 years ago has been jailed for five-and-a-half years. Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced Delaney to consecutive sentences totalling five-and-a-half years. Mr Justice Naidoo said Delaney had “deliberately groomed” a young teenager that had an immediate and long-lasting impact of her. Mr Justice Naidoo said the sentences imposed should be consecutive as the case involved “sequential offending” which had increased in seriousness and involved deliberate grooming. Mr Justice Naidoo thanked the woman for attending the court hearings and said he understands the difficulties it would have caused her.
