Boohoo boss to step down as it launches strategic review
It came as the fast fashion retailer also announced another slump in sales and struck a new refinancing deal. On Friday, Boohoo chief executive John Lyttle said he has informed the company’s board that he will step down from his role after five years. In the update to shareholders, Boohoo also said it is launching a strategic review of potential options to improve shareholder value, increasing speculation regarding a potential break-up of the business. It came as the company also reported that revenues dropped by 15% to £620 million for the six months to August 31. It reported that sales by gross merchandise value (GMV) were down 7% to £1.18 billion for the half-year.

Rebecca Ferguson ‘tried reaching out’ to X Factor co-star Liam Payne
The singer-songwriter, who appeared in the final of The X Factor with One Direction in 2010, said she was “in denial, shocked and hurt” after Payne fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ferguson said she had attempted to contact Payne “last Saturday” as she said she could see he was struggling. Discussing her time with Payne on The X Factor, she continued: “When we all lived together, and we toured together, we were like a family. A press release from Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No 16 said it would be investigating the incident as an “inconclusive death” after the conclusions of the report. Police officers and the emergency services found Payne dead at the scene and his body was transferred to the judicial morgue. The prosecutor’s office indicated the musician was alone when the fall occurred and said he appeared to be “going through some kind of outbreak due to substance abuse”. One Direction was formed in 2010, with Payne, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles, after they individually auditioned for The X Factor.

Weight-loss drugs show promise in tackling opioid and alcohol abuse
Ozempic and similar products cut opioid and alcohol abuse by up to half, according to research that adds to evidence of the hugely popular blockbuster drugs’ broad potential beyond tackling obesity and diabetes. In the more than 5,000 participants suffering from alcohol abuse and using a GLP-1 drug, there was a 50 per cent lower rate of intoxication than for those without a prescription. The study, published in the journal Addiction on Thursday, is the latest effort to find medicinal ways to combat addiction. It will provide further understanding of the ever-growing potential uses of GLP-1s and boost hopes of tackling the US opioid epidemic. Known side effects such as nausea and vomiting lead many users to stop using the drugs within a year.

Nursing home residents now have better qualify of life, but rise of corporate owners creates risk, report warns
The Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) published a 15 year overview report on the regulation of nursing homes. The report shows that significant progress has been made in enhancing the quality of care in nursing homes, although continued improvement is necessary. Many smaller, local nursing homes, especially in rural Ireland, have closed in recent years, leading to a loss of these community-based homes. The report also demonstrates the trend towards larger nursing homes with more beds. The need to continue the programme of reform of the regulatory framework is also highlighted in the overview report.

First Minister attends Ireland-Wales Forum for first overseas visit
IN HER FIRST overseas visit as First Minister, Eluned Morgan is in Dublin and Cork this week as part of engagements to strengthen further the links between Wales and Ireland. The main purpose of FM’s visit will be to attend the Ireland-Wales Ministerial Forum in Cork today (Friday 18th October), hosted by the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin. This is the fourth Forum, following meetings in Cardiff in 2021, Cork in 2022 and Bangor in North Wales last year. Yesterday, the First Minister visited Dublin, where she met Irish President Michael D. Higgins at the President’s Official residence. The First Minister also met with Eamon Ryan TD, Ireland’s Minister for Transport and Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications in Dublin and will hold a bilateral meeting with the Tánaiste as part of Friday’s Forum events in Cork.

Ireland has told Uefa it wants to host more Euro 2028 matches
By Gráinne Ní Aodha, PAIreland has asked to host more Euro 2028 matches after five games due to be staged in Belfast will no longer be played in the city. Junior minister for sport, Thomas Byrne, said they had asked for any additional matches to be “on a regional basis”, suggesting that they be held outside Dublin. The Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the home of Ireland’s international football team, is already set to host six games in the tournament. Speaking at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, culture and sports minister Catherine Martin said that she would like to see more of the tournament’s matches held on the island of Ireland. But both she and Mr Byrne said that each bid to a host sporting event would be weighed up against the possible risks and benefits to the economy and communities in Ireland.
