Ireland's competition watchdog has been prompted to use new powers by Uniphar's acquisition of a pharmacy software provider. In January, Uniphar, the pharmacy wholesale and retail giant, acquired a software business called Touchstore. Uniphar is, after United Drug, the biggest pharmacy wholesale business in Ireland. And, with brands like Allcare Pharmacy, Hickey’s Pharmacy and McCauley Health and Beauty, it is a significant player in the retail side of the business. But this deal fell “significantly below the mandatory notification thresholds” that would normally put it on the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (CCPC) radar, Uniphar says.

VAR checked the Amad appeal and said the contact was "not sufficient for a foul". United took the lead again through James Hill's own goal, but lost Harry Maguire soon after when he brought down Evanilson and denied a goalscoring opportunity. Junior Kroupi buried the penalty, leaving United furious as they were left to settle for a point. FOLLOW OUR MAN UTD FB PAGE! Europe has been reluctant to become involved as only 4 per cent of oil it consumes transits Hormuz. The Strait handles 40 per cent of China’s seaborne oil imports and 40-60 per cent of India’s imports. Oil tankers and cargo ships line up in the Strait of Hormuz. Instead of admitting to the truth of what happened, now convicted murderer Adam Corcoran concocted a myriad of deceptions, misdirection, and plain old lies. As he said, there was a lot of talk about the fatal explosion in Creeslough, Co Donegal, around that time. If the killer could create a replica of that in the centre of Midleton, it was another chance to get off the hook. If it was a frantic game of chance for the man accused of murder, it was entirely different for the family of Daena Walsh. For whatever reason, that lie — that piece of cruelty upon cruelty that the Walsh family found demonic — was abandoned.

Just last month, Corkman Anthony Quigley, aged 51, was before the courts for sending a sexual Snapchat message to a schoolgirl. The reality of social media apps is quite different to their marketing as “useful positive platforms”, he said. Social media apps are exposing young people to a wide range of harms, including addictive algorithms, sexual violence, and gambling. “We are living in an age of almost non-existent social media regulation, which has created a truly toxic online landscape,” he said. However, “the internet is not social media”, he said, and a ban on social media is not the same as a ban on safe use of the wider internet by teenagers.

Keith Ryan, who led the growth of Julius Baer's wealth management business in Dublin since it was set up in 2012, died on March 12th. Keith Ryan, the managing director of Swiss wealth management group Julius Baer’s Irish office for the past 15 years, has died suddenly. “Keith was instrumental in building our Irish branch into the success it is today,” said Gavin Keane, a managing director with Julius Baer in Ireland, who joined the firm with Keith through the Merrill Lynch acquisition in 2012. Christopher French, former co-head of private wealth management for Europe at Goldman Sachs, said Ryan is remembered “very fondly” by many at the group from his time helping to found its private wealth business in Ireland in the late 2000s. Irish private equity firm Retanus said in a note on its website that Ryan was “the trusted partner to many entrepreneurs who entrusted their wealth” to him.

I even remembered to thank everybody which, when you have a room of people looking at you, is no mean feat. The speech won’t win any awards, handwritten as it is on some loose pages from a reporter’s notebook. A chunk of it seems to be written in shorthand, which, once upon a time, I was actually good at. But when push came to shove — or, perhaps, vows came to vows — it just wasn’t good enough. * David O'Mahony is Irish Examiner assistant editor and a short story writer and novelist

Life promises us nothing except the numbers we call our age — I turned 65 last week. Life’s beauty is a retrospective experience that drifts gently with age in its own time from material to personal meaning. Is that what Lloyd Wright means by the beauty in life? My generation is different to previous ones where reaching 65 meant compulsory retirement, and few if any expectations beyond that. So I’ll keep investing in the beauty in life for as long as time allows me, reminding myself that while 65 might be the old age of youth, it’s also the youth of old age.

This is the Russian shadow fleet: ships that are technically not Russian, but which can be rapidly returned to the Russian register if needed, giving Moscow extraordinary flexibility to integrate them into its national maritime strategy. Such cases illustrate how private contractors may operate aboard shadow fleet vessels, performing functions that extend beyond conventional ship protection. Sanctions enforcement has also exposed the legal complexity surrounding shadow fleet ships. More recently, Sweden has also conducted inspections of suspected shadow fleet vessels in the Baltic Sea as European authorities attempt to tighten enforcement. The Russian shadow fleet may have emerged primarily as a response to economic sanctions.
