UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Saudi Arabia was defeated for a seat in the U.N.’s premier human rights body Wednesday after a campaign by rights groups urging the world body’s members to reject its bid. It was created in 2006 to replace a human rights commission discredited because of some members’ poor rights records. Thailand received 177 votes, Cyprus and Qatar 167 votes, South Korea 161 votes, Marshall Islands 124 votes and Saudi Arabia 117 votes. Human Rights Watch and other groups also criticized other candidates. So did the Latin America and Caribbean group’s candidates Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico and the Central and Eastern Europe group’s candidates, the Czech Republic and North Macedonia.

It’s not too late to preserve KC’s Black-owned restaurants (or to enjoy Black Feast Week)The recent closures of Soiree, The Krave, and Privee — Black-owned restaurants that each became a staple of Kansas City’s evolving food scene — leave a clear void that can’t be ignored, said Ryan Sorrell. The event’s goal is to provide more than just visibility for the participating restaurants — it’s about long-term sustainability. By spotlighting these local businesses, Sorrell hopes Black Feast Week will help generate more restaurant traffic beyond the two-week window, creating lasting visibility for these establishments. Specials during Black Feast Week range from Mattie’s Foods’ BBQ Bacon Chicken Sandwich to Chef Smokey’s gumbo greens with cornbread, and Teetasty Foods’ sampler plates of Egusi and Fufu. Black Feast Week is about celebrating that.”

Two years have passed since the murder of Jina (“Mahsa”) Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman, at the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s morality police. Amini was brutalized and killed for allegedly wearing her hijab, or head-covering, improperly – the sort of “crime” that sends a backward theocracy apoplectic with rage. Her death sparked the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, the latest and perhaps most significant wave of protest among the millions of ordinary Iranians who have been clamoring for regime change for well over a decade, but who have so far been unable to dislodge the ruling mullahs.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “As alleged, Mohamed Bahi obstructed a federal criminal investigation by instructing witnesses to lie and then destroying evidence. The charges unsealed today should leave no doubt about the seriousness of any effort to interfere with a federal investigation, particularly when undertaken by a government employee. In or about 2024, BAHI took steps to obstruct the Federal Investigation by tampering with multiple witnesses and destroying evidence. On or about June 14, 2024, after having met with Official-1, BAHI told the Businessman that Official-1 believed that the Businessman would not cooperate with law enforcement. On or about July 24, 2024, in connection with the Federal Investigation, FBI agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at BAHI’s home and seized BAHI’s cellphone.

A severe drought, worsened by climate change, is driving pastoralists in Ethiopia’s Somali region to abandon traditional herding lifestyles in favor of urban labor, leading to significant shifts in their livelihoods. Former pastoralists express emotional ties to their traditional way of life and struggle with the demands of new jobs, reflecting the broader impacts of climate change on their identities and futures. Drought and climate change across Somali region’s drylands is forcing many, like Ahmed, to seek alternative livelihoods in farming, petty trade (selling milk, clothing, shoes, etc.) In the Somali region, approximately 3.5 million pastoralists — 55% of the population — have seen their livelihoods severely threatened. Before the drought, Ahmed relied entirely on his herd of cows, goats and camels for his family’s livelihood.

There is also a likelihood that the Oromo may also turn against the Somalis on the East of the country soon. This is expected not to improve as the Amhara war is now in full display and would affect the economy as well. In late 2018, Ethiopian Airlines’ chief pilot sent an urgent message to Boeing, the manufacturer of the 737 Max airliner. Barely a month earlier, a 737 Max operated by Lion Air of Indonesia had plunged into the sea, killing everyone on board. At the time, Boeing was providing detailed briefings to pilots in the United States who were asking the same types of questions about how to respond. But Boeing chose not to answer the Ethiopian pilot’s questions beyond referring him to a public document it had already issued after the Lion Air crash. Boeing said in its response that it was prohibited from giving additional information because it was providing technical support to Indonesian authorities investigating that crash.

Addis Abeba — In one of the most significant fuel price increases in recent years, the Ethiopian government has raised retail fuel prices by up to eight birr per liter overnight. Consumers have also expressed concern over the recent fuel price increase. Yohannes Daniel, a heavy cargo truck driver, expects transportation costs to rise following the recent fuel price adjustment. "Over the next three months alone, the government will incur an additional cost of approximately 33 billion birr to subsidize fuel prices," said Ahmed. According to the Ministry, the delay in adjusting retail fuel prices following foreign exchange management reforms has resulted in domestic fuel prices being half of those in neighboring countries.

Ethiopia is positioned to boost its mining capacity with many more megawatts of installed generation capacity, chiefly hydropower, and a couple hundred more megawatts to close the year. Ethiopia’s Bitcoin mining strategy supports data infrastructure developmentThat makes Ethiopia’s move into Bitcoin mining part of its overall strategy to develop the infrastructure for data mining and AI training. The specifics of the agreement are still somewhat obscure, but the Ethiopian government has consistently put Bitcoin mining within the framework of its high-performance computing strategy, which includes it. Heading into the future, the combination of cheap energy costs and government support is a promising recipe for the future of Bitcoin mining in East Africa.
