By Fatima Hussein | The Associated PressSherri Myers, an 82-year-old resident of Pensacola City, Florida, says the Social Security cost-of-living increase she’ll receive in January “won’t make a dent” in helping her meet her day-to-day expenses. About 70.6 million Social Security recipients are expected to receive a smaller cost of living increase for 2025 than in recent years, as inflation has moderated. The Social Security Administration makes the official COLA announcement Thursday, and analysts predicted in advance it would be 2.5% for 2025. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes was $168,600 for 2024, up from $160,200 in 2023. The Republican Study Committee’s Fiscal Year 2025 plan has proposed cutting Social Security costs by raising the retirement age and reducing the annual COLA.

By Ashleigh Furlong and Jef Feeley | BloombergGSK Plc said it will pay as much as $2.2 billion to resolve about 80,000 US court cases related to allegations that its old reflux medication Zantac was contaminated with a suspected carcinogen. The cases represent about 93% of those against the company involving Zantac, GSK said Wednesday in a statement. The US Food and Drug Administration asked companies producing Zantac to remove all ranitidine-based drugs from the US market in 2020. Pfizer agreed to settle more than 10,000 related cases, Bloomberg reported in May. Valisure had alleged that GSK knew and hid the risks of Zantac from the US government.

The greater Los Angeles area suffered a nearly 20% drop in scripted film and television production in 2023 compared to the prior year, continuing several years of declines, according to a report released Wednesday. FilmLA, the area’s film office, reported that the region’s scripted film and TV production fell to 183 projects last year, a drop of 45 from the prior year, and representing only a small fraction of the 990 total projects produced in all jurisdictions in 2023. According to FilmLA, the greater Los Angeles area was home to nearly 23% of scripted projects in 2021, but that share fell to 22% in 2022 and slipped to 18% last year. “For each film industry supplier that closes his or her doors due to lack of steady work — those entrepreneurs no longer employ people, generate sales taxes or pay rent. “Our community members’ livelihoods are on the line, which is why Los Angeles County launched the Entertainment Business Interruption Fund, and we continue to explore ways to incentivize local production,” Horvath said.

On September 27, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),celebrated World Tourism Day under the theme “Tourism for Peace,” yet Ethiopia’s tourism promotions stand in stark contrast to this ideal. Ethiopia’s “Tourism Washing” StrategyThe Ethiopian government has increasingly relied on “tourism washing,” a tactic used to divert attention from internal crises. International tourism bodies, like the UNWTO, must enforce stricter standards for transparency in tourism marketing, ensuring that promotional materials reflect the real conditions on the ground. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/ethiopia-travel-advisory.html United Nations World Tourism Organization. At embarrassing magnitudes, US Special Envoy to Horn Africa, Mike Hammer, is the one who is enshrined with ultimate authority in dictating what Ethiopia has to march with and not! What are the certain provocations of the United Arab Emirates in aligning with the Paramilitary Forces in Sudan, the regime in Addis Ababa, Somaliland and others? The questions are endless but failures to read neighbors and the global geo-politics working frames has now left Addis Ababa in certainty of uncertainties. Refrain or Exacerbate: The Illusion of the Political AllegoriesAddis Ababa has still been continuing its exacerbating moves. This in return has been widening the political vacuum in Ethiopia and, apparently, is galloping the country into losing all-round major battles.

Honda Motor Co. is recalling close to 1.7 million vehicles due to a manufacturing issue that could make it difficult to steer the vehicles and lead to crashes. Honda reported the recall last week to government regulators, who issued the recall order on Tuesday. The vehicles covered in the recall were from model years 2022 to 2025 and include certain Acura Integras, Honda Civics, Honda CR-Vs and Honda HR-Vs. The NHTSA announced an investigation of the problem back in March after it received 145 complaints from Honda Civic drivers that their steering could stick, forcing them to exert extra effort to turn the steering wheel. At the time of the original announcement earlier this year, the NHTSA said it had no reports of crashes or injuries from the problem.

Talks between Boeing and the union representing 33,000 striking machinists have broken down with the two sides blaming each other for refusing to compromise, leaving little hope that the walkout now entering its fourth week will be resolved anytime soon. It was their third meeting since machinists voted overwhelmingly last month to reject Boeing initial offer of a 25 percent wage increase over four years. The last strike by machinists in 2008 lasted 54 days. AdvertisementThe stalemate between Boeing and its largest employee union comes as the company is facing multiple legal, safety and financial crises. Analysts estimate that the strike could be costing Boeing $1 billion a week.

But Boeing chose not to answer the Ethiopian pilot’s questions beyond referring him to a public document it had already issued after the Lion Air crash. Three months after the request by Ethiopian Airlines, one of its 737 Max’s nosedived into the ground after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, killing all 157 people on board. Despite the constraints Boeing described in the response to the Ethiopian chief pilot, Boeing officials discussed numerous details of the Lion Air crash. Naoise Connolly Ryan, who lives in Ireland with her two young children, lost her husband, Mick Ryan, in the Ethiopian crash. Ryan criticized Boeing for holding back safety information from airlines, calling it criminal and suggesting it could have prevented the Ethiopian crash.

A Boeing 737 MAX crash that killed 156 people was caused, at least in part, by the company refusing to pass on safety information to its operator, aviation experts have revealed. The 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash killed all passengers on board when the MAX 8 nose-dived into a field just south of the capital, Addis Ababa, and came just months after another plane in Indonesia had crashed almost identically. Now experts say that Boeing’s refusal to provide Ethiopian Airlines pilots with the same safety information shared with U.S. airlines “most likely” contributed to crash. Boeing initially suggested that the Ethiopian crash was due to pilot error–making the finding the latest blow to its battered reputation. Boeing declined to answer the Ethiopian Airlines pilot’s queries, aside from pointing him to a public document published after the Indonesian flight’s catastrophic accident, despite providing detailed briefings to pilots in the U.S. asking the same questions.
