Led by Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) announced that it has removed five members of the interim administration of the Tigray region from their positions, including President Getachew Reda. The statement also noted, "officials serving in the interim administration, including President Getachew and other cabinet members and bureau heads, will no longer have the authority to lead, make decisions, or issue directives." The TPLF further cautioned that the interim administration appears to be positioning itself as a permanent government, issuing declarations in the name of its cabinet. Moreover, the TPLF accused the interim administration of "neglecting its responsibilities outlined in the Pretoria Peace Agreement and instead engaging in manipulative efforts to consolidate power." This split has led to a rift between the party's veteran leader and chairman, Debretsion, and Getachew, the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, who was expelled from the party following the 14th TPLF Congress.

Taye's appointment was approved today in a joint session of the House of People's Representatives (HoPR) and the House of Federation (HoF), replacing the former president Sahle-Work Zewde. However, he cautioned that any attempt to "achieve political goals through force" would not be tolerated, stating that the government had "already given too much time." The new president also stressed that legal measures would be taken against those who "weaken the age-old ties" between Ethiopians through hate speech, violence, and other actions. The transition from former President Sahle-Work Zewde has been marked by public speculation over her future. Although many anticipated a formal farewell speech from the outgoing president today, none was given, and the joint session ended with the approval of Taye as the new president.

Ethiopian lawmakers on Monday chose Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie as the country’s new president — a largely ceremonial role — leaving Africa with only one female head of state. Atske Selassie replaced Sahle-Work Zewde, 74, a respected former diplomat who had served as president since 2018. That leaves Tanzania as the only African country with a woman as president, Samia Suluhu Hassan. Taye, 68, becomes the fifth president since Ethiopia adopted its current constitution in 1995. He was appointed to the foreign ministry only in February and has previously served as ambassador to the United Nations and Egypt.
