In its Global Peace Index published in London on Wednesday the Institute ranks 163 countries on the basis of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators. The Tigray conflict in Ethiopia claimed the most victims by far last year. More than 100,000 are reported to have been killed in conflict there over the course of 2022. Among the indicators taken into account in the Global Peace Index are deaths from internal and external conflict, the murder rate, degree of militarisation, weapons exports, terrorism, political instability and the number of prisoners. Iceland topped the list of most peaceful countries with New Zealand second and Australia in 12th place.

Air France-KLM airline group is banking on the growing demand for passenger air services within African continent. Air France-KLM executives have rated the African skies as a strategic priority for the airline group. Today, a handover ceremony of high-quality medical equipment took place at the MfM Project Coordination Office in the presence of Dr Lia Tadesse, Minister, and H.E. The medical assets handed over included a wide range of essential medical equipment, such as ventilators, diagnosis machinery, laboratory equipment, operation room facilities, ICU machinery, maternity facilities as well as ward and admission facilities. The medical equipment will support health facilities in Ethiopia, including the conflict-affectedAmhara, Afar and Tigray regions, assisting in the enhancement of healthcare services and facilities in these areas, ultimately benefiting local communities and individuals in need. The medical equipment not only contributes to reestablishing health services but also to improving the quality of clinical management of patients and provision of critical care services at our health facilities”. The MoH and MfM will distribute the donated medical equipment to health facilities in areas most in need.

ADDIS ABABA – Health Minister Lia Tadesse has appreciated Germany’s ‘timely support’ after the Ministry recieved medical equipment donation valued at 1.2 million euros in Wednesday. The medical equipment support includes ventilators, diagnosis machinery, ICU machinery, lab equipment, operation room and maternity facilities. “The donation supports the Ministry in overcoming setbacks in our health system due to the conflict and shortage of material resources,” Health Minister Lia said. “The medical equipment not only contributes to reestablishing health services but also to improving the quality of clinical management of patients and provision of critical care services at our health facilities”. The medical equipment – donated by the German Development Cooperation and the Bavarian state through MfM – are said to be state of the art and valued at 1.2 million euros.

The U.N. and the U.S. first suspended food aid to Tigray in March after the discovery of a scheme to steal donated wheat intended for needy people. In mid-March, U.S. aid officials found enough food aid for 134,000 people for sale in a local market in Shire, the zone’s biggest town. UN FOOD RELIEF AGENCY SUSPENDS AID DELIVERIES TO ETHIOPIA’S NORTHERN TIGRAY REGIONThe recent war left 5.4 million out of 6 million people in Tigray reliant on food aid. Aid workers have told The Associated Press, which first reported the food aid theft, that senior Ethiopian government officials were deeply involved. NAIROBI, June 27 (Reuters) - Safaricom (SCOM.NR) has appointed Wim Vanhelleputte as chief executive officer of its Ethiopia business from September, an internal memo seen by Reuters on Tuesday showed. Vanhelleputte, who joins from South Africa's MTN Group where he served in various roles over the years, including as chief executive of MTN Uganda, will replace Anwar Soussa, who will leave his post at the end of next month. Apart from signing on new subscribers, Safaricom is also introducing its M-Pesa financial services in the next few months, after securing a financial licence in May. He joins Safaricom Ethiopia from MTN Group, where he was the Operations Executive – Markets since August 2022 and was responsible for the performance and governance of four operating companies in West and Central Africa, the announcement added. Prior to that he was the CEO of MTN Uganda, a role he held from 2016. “Wim brings extensive leadership experience and deep industry knowledge, having worked in the telecommunications industry across multiple markets in sub-Saharan Africa for over 25 years,” Safaricom PLC said. DUBAI: Swiss luxury watchmaker Aramedes has added designs aimed at women to its recently released Mecca Collection, which incorporates key functions in its products to help Muslims practice their faith. To fill this gap, Aramedes designed a high-tech electronic component integrated into the watch case, with software to calculate the location of the wearer via mobile radio triangulation. ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Commodity Exchanges (ECX) says its board of directors has appointed Hailu Nigussie as a deputy chief executive officer for the trading platform. The decision has promoted Hailu from warehouse operation chief to deputize Wondimagegnehu Negera, current CEO of the 15-year old entity. The deputy CEO has been serving the ECX for the last 15 years in various capacities including the head of trading operations. ECX’s new Deputy CEO Hailu NigussieHis latest promotion was approved by the newly appointed governing board of the ECX on Monday, the exchange says. The ECX – launched to improve the efficiency of the country’s trading system in 2008 – serves as an electronic trading platform for major agricultural commodities such as coffee.
