The government initially sought to bring in two new licence holders when it approved Safaricom Ethiopia’s proposal in May 2021, but it only received one other bid. The $600m proposal from South Africa’s MTN was rejected, while Orange and E& expressed interest but didn’t end up submitting proposals. The third attempt to issue a new licence was kicked off in November 2022, alongside a peace-treaty signed between the warring factions. A third licence holder will have an uphill battle to compete with former monopoly Ethiotel, who have 70 million subscribers. The deadline for responding to the RFQ was announced as September 15 2023.

Ethiopia's Animal Product Exports in 2022/2023 Reach USD 86 Million in Revenue
The Livestock Development Institute (LDI) has reported that animal product exports have yielded approximately USD 86 million in revenue over the past eleven months. The country exported approximately 20,000 tons of animal products including meat, honey, camel milk, and offal products were exported to various countries worldwide. The major destinations for the products were the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Nigeria, and Kenya. Sahlu further stated that new market destinations for Ethiopian animal products have been established in Cambodia, Seychelles, and Azerbaijan through agreements. At least 3 killed in North Shoa Road accident, Police say – Ethiopian Monitor
ADDIS ABABA – At least three people were killed in a road accident in North Shoa zone of Amhara region, according to a police report on Sunday. The Amhara police commission says the crash involving a ‘Hi Roof’ minibus occurred in Minjar Shenkora district on Saturday afternoon. In the last 11 months, more than 2290 people have become victims of road accidents in Amhara region, up by 14.14% from the same months last year. About 820 of the victims lost their lives, says the regional traffic police report that blamed drivers for 81% of the road total crashes in the region. A total of 530,000 drivers have been penalized for violating traffic regulations in the first eleven months of the concluding budget year.

US Eases Sanctions on Ethiopia Amid Human Rights Progress
Washington: In light of improvements in human rights, the US has loosened some aid restrictions for Ethiopia, according to White House national security spokesperson John Kirby.
