Apart from bringing new business ideas, the management team controls the operations. My efforts while I was in Sudan, struggling to get myself out, and developing business ideas, have contributed a lot. I discuss and debate business ideas with my team, and we do what is approved after those debates. It is fair to say that new business ideas should be backed by robust marketing. If I tell you in numbers, I think Ethiopia will rank from 1 to 3 in the next 5 years.

“We are lifting some restrictions on certain kinds of assistance, while pausing food aid,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. “Our fundamental approach here has been to reinforce progress toward enduring peace, while not overlooking concerns in Ethiopia when we assess that our assistance is being misdirected,” Kirby said. The United States terminated Ethiopia’s trading preferences under the African Growth and Opportunity Act effective the start of 2022, pointing to human rights concerns. The United States has previously estimated that some 500,000 people died in the two-year conflict, making it one of the deadliest wars of the 21st century and dwarfing the toll from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The State Department said separately Friday that the change in guidance did not erase US concerns about the situation in Ethiopia.

The recent decision by the US Treasury Department to backtrack on its determination of gross human rights violations in Ethiopia has sparked outrage among human rights advocates and international organizations. The move, based on a State Department assessment, has raised concerns about the US government’s commitment to upholding human rights and seeking justice for victims of atrocities in the war-torn region. The decision has triggered a wave of criticism from prominent human rights organizations, which argue that the move overlooks the ongoing human rights abuses and sends a dangerous message that atrocity determinations carry minimal consequences. “We’re deeply concerned that the US government no longer believes that gross violations of human rights are occurring in Ethiopia,” expressed Sarah Yager, Washington Director at Human Rights Watch. In June, Human Rights Watch published findings of an ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign against Tigrayans in Ethiopia’s Western Tigray Zone, including allegations of torture, arbitrary detention, and forced expulsion.

Ethiopia, one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, has asked to join the BRICS bloc of emerging markets, the foreign ministry said on Thursday. The term BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in 2001 to describe the rise of Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2010. Ethiopia will continue to work with international institutions that can protect its interests, he said. BRICS countries account for more than 40% of the world’s population and about 26% of the global economy.

The improvement on human rights occurred particularly after the cessation-of-hostilities agreement signed by the Ethiopian government and forces from its Tigray region in November, Kirby said. "This decision, we believe, expands the tools available to us to bolster our support for a durable peace in Ethiopia." The United States Trade Representative leads an annual interagency review of sub-Saharan countries’ eligibility for AGOA benefits, this spokesperson said. The United States in March determined that all sides had committed war crimes. Ethiopia rejected the allegations as did neighboring Eritrea, whose forces fought in support of Ethiopian troops against Tigrayan forces.
