The kingpin of the house where over 100 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested is believed to be a 39-year-old Ethiopian national who has refugee status in the country. This has been confirmed by Minister of Home Affairs Dr Aaron Motsoaledi who was at the home in Primrose, east of Johannesburg. Minister Motsoaledi says it seems the Ethiopian national has been hired to run the home. The four passports found at the premises had no visas or stamps at a port of entry to South Africa. Minister Motsoaledi says they believe this could be a child trafficking syndicate.

Addressing the Defence Force media, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula described the "extremist" groups operating in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara and Oromia regions, as no longer posing a significant threat. The Amhara region, home to a prominent local militia known as Fano, has been embroiled in a prolonged conflict with the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF). Contrary to Field Marshal Birhanu Jula's claims, local media reports indicate escalating clashes in some areas this week. General Birhanu noted that the defense army is currently operating at only 10 percent of its capacity in the Amhara region. Claims by Fano that they captured three helicopters, tanks, and killed a military general were refuted as "false" by Field Marshal Birhanu Jula.

By NJ Ayuk – In this article the writer argues that delayed organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cuts mean opportunity for African members. Many of OPEC’s African member states had been struggling to produce enough crude to meet the targets set for them last year. Algeria and Gabon are the two African members among those volunteers. Algeria in the north is another high achiever, with production capacity that exceeds its 2024 OPEC target of 959,000 bpd. A united effort to awaken more investor interest in African oil should start now, as should cooperation among African members to present a more unified voice when the 36th OPEC meeting is held in November, 2023.
