Cairo to host Afreximbank African trade center – New Business Ethiopia
African Export-Import Bank has signed a formal agreement for the acquisition of land for the New Administrative Capital African Trade Centre (NAC-ATC), which will house the Bank’s headquarters, along with other trade-supporting facilities and entities, in Egypt’s new administrative capital in Cairo. The agreement provides for a complex that includes a conference centre, a hotel, an exhibition centre, an innovation hub and retail facilities. Eritrean Defense Forces committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity in Tigray, Amnesty International alleges

Amnesty’s new findings focus on the Kokob Tsibah and Mariam Shewito districts, which remained under the EDF’s control until 19 January 2023. Within the Amnesty report released on Tuesday, a social worker says that a total of 160 sexual violence cases were reported in Kokob Tsibah between November 2020 and January 2023. One woman told Amnesty International that “her husband’s body remained at the place where he was killed for three months.”Extrajudicial executions are also reported to have taken place in Mariam Shewito district. “Communities in Kokob Tsibah and Mariam Shewito have had their lives changed, irreversibly, by the violations they experienced at the hands of the EDF,” Amnesty International said.

Eritrean troops 'committed war crimes' in Ethiopia after peace deal: Amnesty
Addis Ababa (AFP) – Eritrean troops allied with Ethiopia's government "committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity" in Tigray, raping, enslaving and executing civilians for months after the signing of a peace agreement, Amnesty International said Tuesday. "The serious violations documented in this report amount to war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity," the rights watchdog said. In its first report published last September the commission said it had found evidence of widespread violations by all sides and accused Ethiopia and Eritrea of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity. Ethiopia has repeatedly rejected international efforts to investigate abuses connected with the war in Tigray and warned that any probes could undermine the progress of the AU-brokered peace agreement. During a rare press conference in Kenya earlier this year, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki dismissed accusations of rights abuses by Eritrean troops in Tigray as "fantasy".

African Development Bank Group – AfDB debars Ethiopian firm and its chairperson for fraudulent practices
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has announced the 15-month debarment of Beza Consulting Engineers PLC and its Chairperson and General Manager, Gidey Gebregzibher, effective from 21 August 2023. Beza Consulting Engineers PLC, a consulting firm registered in Ethiopia, and Gidey were found to have engaged in fraudulent practices during a tender for the Provision of Consultancy Services for the Kapoeta-Boma-Raad Road Project, the bank said. - Advertisement -During the debarment period, Beza Consulting, its affiliates, and Gidey are not allowed to engage in any Bank Group-financed activities. To resume participation after the debarment period, Beza Consulting must implement an integrity compliance program in accordance with the Bank’s guidelines. Gidey will also need to complete an accredited business ethics and integrity training consistent with the Bank’s guidelines, according to the Bank.
