Addis Ababa - Ethiopian Airlines successfully weathered the Covid pandemic by shifting its strategy, but Africa’s only profitable carrier still faces “real challenges” in sourcing parts and staying competitive at a time of inflation, its CEO told AFP. “We carried 13.7 million passengers, which is a 57-percent growth compared to the previous year and 10 percent higher than pre-Covid. We also carried 740,000 tonnes of cargo, which is nearly double pre-Covid,” he said. The airline turned to freight when passenger traffic fell, including converting some of its passenger aircraft to transport cargo. “The figures indicate that we have fully recovered from the impacts of Covid,” said Mesfin, who was appointed to the job in March 2022.

Her mother cleaned houses and made and sold pottery so that the family could eat and have a roof over their heads. Aklog BiraraIn this VOA interview I argue with another Ethiopian, that Ethiopia’s Prime Minister is elected to serve all of the Ethiopian people and Ethiopia as a country. b) In all budgetary situations, there must be openness, transparency, socioeconomic purpose, responsibility not to squander resources and accountability for end use. The PM cannot operate above the law and expect the rest of the population to adhere to the rule of law. I thank VOA for asking me to express my views on this hot and timely topic. High home prices are straining the budgets of first-time homebuyers as the ongoing housing shortage pushed the cost of starter homes to a record high, according to a report. A first-time buyer needs to earn $64,500 annually to afford a home at this price point, a 13 percent increase from last year. San Francisco, Austin and Phoenix are the only metros analyzed by Redfin where buyers can earn less than last year and afford a starter home. But buyers in Miami need 25 percent more income than last year to afford starter homes priced at $300,000. “With consumer price inflation calming close to the Federal Reserve’s desired conditions, mortgage rates look to have topped out,” Yun said.

More than 20 leading U.S. and international rights groups and think tanks separately made the same appeal, arguing that the U.S. practice of holding back some aid was leading el-Sissi to make “limited, albeit insufficient ” rights improvements in Egypt. Egypt agreed instead to provide the United States with artillery rounds for transfer for Ukraine, the Post reported, citing another leaked document. Congress in recent years has made the U.S. payment of roughly $300 million of U.S. military aid contingent on Egypt’s government showing progress on rights, although the State Department can partially override that, on national security grounds. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, PEN International and other rights groups and think tanks in the other letter Friday credited the Biden administration’s financial pressure with helping persuade Egypt to free more than 1,000 political detainees. At the same time, rights advocates say, Egypt has detained nearly 5,000 others, and renewed pretrial detentions of thousands more.
