Today, more than 20 million Ethiopians are in need of external food aid assistance. That is why the news of industrial scale food aid theft involving corruption and mismanagement of food aid distribution in crisis-hit Ethiopia caught the word by a shock. These factors are the exact opposite factors of why Ethiopia’s food aid management system in the past had been considered solid. Peace and stability are essential for food security and humanitarian aid distribution to be effective. But only condemning abhorrent food aid theft by cutting aid is punishing victims twice.

There are elements of business that go against religious principles and which might compromise ethical behaviour and practices. Yet, others believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with religious people being involved in profit-making endeavours. The Batik Group at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Jamaica Holy Trinity Branch is of the latter view, it seems, as its members are making and selling Jadire™ batik print materials. They also intend to train other church members, “as well as other interested persons or groups, sometime in the first half of 2024”. The making and selling of batik fabric, then, is one way in which the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Holy Trinity Branch Batik Group is attaining financial stability.

From the WebborkenaThe United Nations’ body for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, says it is unlikely that it will deliver humanitarian aid for the displaced in the Wollega area of Ethiopia. VOA Amharic service this week cited the organization as saying that prevalent security problem especially in East Wollega, Horo Guduru and Kelem Wollega ( all in the Oromia region of Ethiopia) made it difficult to delivery humanitarian aid. On the other hand, displaced people (mostly ethnic Amhara) in the above-mentioned areas have been saying that they are in dire situations and need emergency humanitarian aid. Military activity of the armed group in the Oromia region made movement difficult. News of ransom kidnapping by gunmen related to the armed group have been making news headlines in local media outlets.

Getachew Reda (from social media)By Staff ReporterADDISABABA – (BORKENA) – The Interim President of Tigray Regional State, Getachew Reda travelled to the USA and held discussions with certain Congress members who supported Tigray People’s Liberation Front during the recent war it had with the Federal Government. I mean, to the best of my belief, Getachew is there representing the region to talk about “anything” (?) Or is it possible to play a real role of a Federal Official who represents one of the ministerial offices? The “hundreds of thousands of IDPs” thing in Tigray… Aren’t there more TPLF-orchestrated attacks, killings and displacements in Amhara and Afar? Does the Federal Government tolerate such pomposity if it comes from the administrators of other regions like Amhara, Afar, Sidama…?

The WHO has disclosed that a cholera outbreak, which started in August 2022, has spread to 42 districts of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNP Region) of Ethiopia and resulted in more than 4,000 cases. The UN health agency said on Friday in a press statement that it is working with the Ethiopian government and partner agencies to provide support to cholera-affected areas of the region, Xinhua news agency reported. The assistance WHO is currently providing includes the deployment of technical experts to affected areas, and undertaking capacity-building training on cholera outbreak management. Earlier this month, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) warned that Ethiopia would continue to face huge humanitarian challenges, with conflict and displacement, extended drought, floods and disease outbreaks as the main drivers of need. The UNFPA said although humanitarian partners are providing life-saving support that includes shelter, non-food items, water and protection services, a scale-up of assistance is needed to support the expected new arrivals in the following months of 2023.
