Uganda's Victor Kiplangat is the new world marathon men’s champion. The 23-year-old gallantly protected his lead to win his country’s second ever world marathon title in 2 hours 8 minutes 53 seconds on Sunday (27 August) at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, exactly 10 years after compatriot Stephen Kiprotich won the title in Moscow in 2013. Kiplangat added a world marathon gold to the Commonwealth Games title he clinched last year in Birmingham on the final day of the championships, on what is expected to be the hottest day this year in the Hungarian capital. "There was a lot of cheering but last part was very challenging so I am grateful I even finished. This is my first world championships marathon, it was tough but I believe I will come back even stronger for the next time," he said.

The Italian Red Cross has said it is struggling to cope with thousands of migrants at a cramped center on the island of Lampedusa. Hundreds of migrants arrived on the small island over the weekend, stretching the center beyond its capacity. "Clearly, this is an important situation, and an emergency situation, because with 4,000 people in a structure for 800 it is evident that it becomes a critical situation," Ignazio Schintu who coordinates the centre for the Italian Red Cross, told the Associated Press. The Red Cross took over the management of the hotspot on June 1 and in the past three months Schintu estimates at least 48,000 migrants have passed through it. After a short period of time on the island, most migrants are transferred on ferry boats to other parts of Italy.

CAIRO (AP) — The head of Sudan’s army made a rare public speech Monday in his first tour outside of the capital since the conflict with a rival general erupted in mid-April. In the eastern coastal city of Port Sudan, Burhan said a military operation that included naval and air forces enabled him to leave the capital’s army headquarters safely. The conflict has reduced the capital to an urban battlefield, with the RSF controlling vast swaths of the city. The military command, where Burhan has purportedly been stationed since April, has been one of the epicenters of the conflict, besieged by RSF forces. In a statement issued late Sunday, Dagalo unveiled a new initiative that could restart peace talks between the two forces.

The Egyptian government announced this Sunday the resumption of negotiations with Ethiopia on the Great Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, an aspect that has complicated relations between the two countries. In this sense, Cairo has stressed that it rejects “any unilateral step” that does not take into account the above aspects, adding that it will “make every effort to make the negotiation process a success”. Bekele, in turn, stressed that the tripartite negotiations would strengthen cooperation between the three countries and described the possible outcomes of this meeting as “immense benefits” for both Addis Ababa and Cairo or Khartoum. Egypt and Ethiopia are at odds over the construction of the aforementioned dam. The governments of these three countries agreed in principle in January 2020 on the main points of contention around infrastructure, but Addis Ababa dropped out of the talks before the agreement was signed.

CAIRO — A new round of negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue commenced Sunday with the participation of Sudanese, Egyptian and Ethiopian delegations. Filling and operating the dam by one side is a violation of the Declaration of Principles, signed in 2015, he noted. The massive $4.2-billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been at the center of a regional dispute ever since Ethiopia broke ground on the project in 2011, with Egypt fearing it will slash its share of Nile water. Protracted negotiations over the filling and operation of the dam since 2011 have thus far failed to bring about an agreement between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbors. Egypt has long viewed the dam as an existential threat, as it relies on the Nile for 97 percent of its water needs.

Ethiopia’s entry into the BRICS mechanism is expected to significantly boost the country’s economic growth and strengthen its mutually beneficial regional ties, an Ethiopian expert has said. “Ethiopia, despite being a relatively poor country, is a strong and civilized nation with a vast population. “The BRICS must have seen mutual benefit in admitting Ethiopia as a member. Miftah further emphasized Ethiopia’s potential in conflict resolution, peace-building, countering terrorism, and sustainable development, which has contributed to its selection as a member of BRICS. The expert argued that Ethiopia’s entry into the BRICS is a win-win move, which injects momentum into the country’s economy and enhances the bloc’s role in regional multilateral cooperation at the same time.
