Federal High Court orders former chief of Somali Region to defend his case
The 1st Anti-Terrorism and Constitutional trial of the Federal High Court, which has been dealing with Abdi’s case, was scheduled for today to give a verdict on the case filed by the prosecutor. Among the individuals who have been asked to defend the case presented by the prosecutor included Abdi Mohammed who governed the Somali Region for eight years. The Federal High Court reached the decision that the defender, the former president of Somali Region, should “defend” this criminal case, according to his lawyer Eskindir. In today’s hearing, the Federal Prosecutor announced that apart from the main case against the defender, a verdict was also given on the “alternative case”. The Federal High Court adjourned the cases of the defendants until 13 November 2023.

Ethiopia: Dashen Bank Receives USD 40 Million from International Loan
Dashen Bank, one of Ethiopia's largest banks, has received a USD 40 million loan from the British International Investment (BII) and the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO). The loan will help Dashen Bank strengthen its export lending capabilities and support agricultural product exporters by facilitating the purchase of new machinery. The loan is in line with the new foreign exchange facilitation guidelines set by the National Bank of Ethiopia in 2021. Dashen Bank CEO Asfaw Alemu said that the loan would help to stimulate the market and attract more resources from international investors. Dashen Bank has a customer base of over 5 million and operates through more than 80 branches across Ethiopia.

Ethiopia: Ministry Announces Revised Fuel Prices
The Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration announced a revision on prices for fuel, starting from August 29, 2023. The Ministry cited the global surge in fuel prices as the main reason for the fuel price increment. The fuel prices remained unchanged since June, 2023. President Bola Tinubu is looking to strengthen bilateral ties with Ethiopia
President Tinubu made these comments at the State House in Abuja after the Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, Awwal Wagris Mohammed, presented his Letter of Credence to the Nigerian President. Huawei Launches its Annual ICT Competition in Ethiopia – Ethiopian Monitor
ADDIS ABABA – Huawei Technologies launched the 2023/24 edition of its ICT Competition in Ethiopia on Monday, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Registration for the upcoming 8th Huawei ICT Competition will open in the first few days of September coinciding with the new Ethiopian academic year begins. The launch of the competition was announced during a ceremony organized to award the winners of the 7th Huawei ICT Competition 2023. More than 1500 students took part in the preliminary exam and 64 students progressed to the national competition. Eighteen students won the national ICT contest and went on to represent Ethiopia in the Huawei ICT competition in Africa.

UK, Dutch financiers channel $40m through Dashen to cultivate underfunded agriculture
British International Investment (BII) and FMO, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank, have jointly committed up to USD 20 million each to Dashen Bank, one of Ethiopia’s largest private banks. The USD 40 million loan aims to drive agricultural exports and provide much-needed foreign exchange in Ethiopia. BII and FMO are supporting Dashen Bank to bolster the country’s agriculture sector, which employs 80 percent of the population and contributes 39 percent to GDP. “We are pleased for achieving this historic milestone,” said Asfaw Alemu, CEO of Dashen Bank. The commitment makes BII and FMO among the first foreign institutions to provide long-term funding under Ethiopia’s bank intermediation directive issued in 2021.

Altered video falsely claims former Ethiopian minister ‘signed over’ disputed territory to Tigray region
A post claims that a clip shows evidence of Gedu Andargachew, a former president of Ethiopia’s Amhara region, handing over disputed land to the neighbouring Tigray region. It was part of Tigray until the war in 2020 when it was annexed to Amhara (archived here). Manipulated videoThe video begins with Gedu saying in a television interview that “Welkait is currently administered under the Tigray region”. At this point, the altered video switches to a block of text in Amharic meaning “six years ago”. There is no evidence of Gedu handing over Welkait to the Tigray region in any of the footage.

In a related development, at least 27 people were killed in Debre Tabor – including three members of the same family – where there was renewed fighting between Fano forces and Ethiopian gov’t forces. Much of the city was under Fano forces for days. However, Fano forces resistance to government atrocities continues in many parts of the city.

In 2021, the government requested a loan from the World Bank after submitting a concept document in October of the same year. The primary objective of the project is to construct 108,797 kilometers of rural roads, connecting 5921 kebeles that currently lack all-season roads. With a population of over 120 million, about 80% of Ethiopians reside in rural areas with insufficient road infrastructure. Despite significant improvements in road connectivity, farmers in Ethiopia still face challenges in accessing markets effectively.
