Earlier this week, the UN Security Council conducted a briefing regarding the situation between Ethiopia and Somalia (Photo: UN)Addis Abeba – The Permanent Mission of Ethiopia to the United Nations issued a statement yesterday saying that it is “disappointed” by the “unjustified accusations” made by Somalia during a UN Security Council briefing on 19 February, 2024. The statement also highlighted Ethiopia’s “enormous sacrifices and contributions to the peace and security of Somalia,” including thousands of lives lost helping fight Al-Shabaab. Ethiopia underscored that it remains ready for dialogue with Somalia to maintain cooperative ties vital to regional security. As “eternal neighbors,” both countries should focus on partnership moving forward rather than damaging accusations, the statement stated. On 19 February, 2024, Catriona Laing, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), told members of the Security Council that the lack of “significant progress” after the AU summit to defuse tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia was “disappointing.” AS

Somalia’s president alleged that Ethiopian security forces tried to bar him from attending the African Union summit in Addis Ababa. The incident came amid a dispute between the countries involving the breakaway region of Somaliland. Speaking to journalists before cutting short his trip, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the actions of the Ethiopian forces were part of a grand scheme by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to annex part of Somalia. The Ethiopian government rejected Mohamud’s claim and said the Somali leader and his delegation declined to be accompanied by a security detail assigned to him. The claims by Mohamud escalated tensions that were already running high because of an agreement signed New Year’s Day between Abiy and Somaliland President Muse Bihi.

While Netanyahu’s conduct in the conflict is criticised, Lula’s comparison to the Holocaust and accusations of a unique war are debunked. By Marc ChampionVisiting Ethiopia, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared Israel’s devastating war in Gaza as a genocide conducted by soldiers on women and children, unique in history except for the Holocaust. Most of these victims were civilians, predominantly women, children or elderly. There are, sadly, many examples in history of the kind of conflict underway in Gaza, and the Holocaust isn’t one of them.
