Somalia will defend itself if Ethiopia seals ‘illegal’ port deal, president saysSomali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his country would “defend itself” if Ethiopia goes ahead with a deal to set up a naval base in the breakaway region of Somaliland and possibly recognise the territory as an independent state. “If Ethiopia insists, Somalia will resist and will refuse,” Mohamud told Reuters on Tuesdayin an interview at the heavily fortified presidential palace in Mogadishu. Analysts and diplomats fear a withdrawal of Ethiopian troops would further destabilise Somalia, where al Shabaab attacks have killed thousands of civilians and soldiers since 2006. Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia in late 2006 to oust an Islamist movement from which al Shabaab originated. Mohamud said his government’s estimates showed al Shabaab had recruited between 6,000 and 8,000 new fighters in January alone.

Turkiye has also been training Somalia’s soldiers for a few years in a bid to help the country develop its army. “Turkiye’s recent strategic moves aim to bolster Somalia’s military, promote stability, and protect its interests through security, economic, and humanitarian efforts,” he added. For Rashid Abdi, chief analyst at Sahan Research, a Nairobi-based think tank, the deal gives Turkiye huge leverage to reshape Somalia and the Horn of Africa. “Turkish navy will help rebuild Somali navy and will deploy ships to patrol its maritime Economic Protection Zone. It is therefore uncertain how Ankara will balance the competing demands of its two Horn allies — Ethiopia and Somalia.

“Turkiye’s recent strategic moves aim to bolster Somalia’s military, promote stability, and protect its interests through security, economic, and humanitarian efforts,” he added. Earlier this month, Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur signed the framework agreement in Ankara that mandated Turkiye to protect Somalia’s territorial waters. For Rashid Abdi, chief analyst at Sahan Research, a Nairobi-based think tank, the deal gives Turkiye huge leverage to reshape Somalia and the Horn of Africa. It is therefore uncertain how Ankara will balance the competing demands of its two Horn allies — Ethiopia and Somalia. Despite acknowledging the strategic significance of the deal, experts caution that its implementation demands substantial investment and logistical capabilities from Turkiye.
