The Christian cemeteries are like a living witness that speaks about the Christian heritage, civilization, and our cultural diversity. Among those cemeteries are the al-Manabir Christian cemetery and Umm Khashm Cemetery. A UK auction house cancelled the sale Thursday of a shield taken from Ethiopia by British soldiers in the 19th century, after pressure from the East African country’s government. The circular dome shield made from hide was removed from what was then called Abyssinia during the battle of Magdala in 1868. The spokeswoman did not specify whether the withdrawal was linked to any specific request from Ethiopian authorities, who have long demanded the return of looted items. In a statement, Ethiopia’s government welcomed the “wise decision” of the auction house and the owner of the shield to scrap the sale and “start negotiations for its repatriation”. Three silver cups and a shield pillaged after the battle were returned to the Ethiopian embassy in a ceremony in London last September.

African countries, he said, have the ability to create their own solutions to solve their problems. “We have, therefore, a unique opportunity to actively transform our countries by transitioning into inclusive, low carbon, and resource-efficient economies,” he stressed. Second, Africa needs to enhance energy access and affordability – Less than 2 percent of global clean energy investments flow to Africa.

The armed conflict between the Ethiopian army and rebels in the country’s northern Amhara region continues, with the government recently accused of massacring civilians in the region. However, this is false: the photos were originally published on Facebook by the Amhara Region Police Commission after they confiscated weapons and ammunition being transported illegally from the Tigray region to Amhara. Menz and Jiru are towns in the northern Shewa zone in the Amhara region. However, the photos do not show firearms captured by the Fano rebel force in Amhara. Search results revealed the images were published on the Amhara Region Police Commission's official Facebook page on February 7, 2024 (archived here).

There are queer folks in my church. There are queer folks in your church too, whether you know it or not. Earlier this month, it became clear that my own church was not safe for our LGBTQ congregants. To my church’s credit, the outpouring of support for the LGBTQ folks in our congregation was immediate and strong despite the fact that not all our members are aligned on LGBTQ inclusion. But is my church safe if such a thing can happen there?

Suozzi’s entrance into Congress further narrows an already slim GOP majority in Congress, which now holds 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats. That means the GOP can only lose two votes to pass a measure, a task made even more difficult by potential absences and divisions across the House Republican Conference. Former New York Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins resigned from Congress earlier this month, former Ohio GOP Rep. Bill Johnson resigned last month and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy resigned at the end of last year. Suozzi won’t be a newcomer to Congress; he represented a previous version of New York’s 3rd Congressional District for three terms. The seat Santos originally won was among the Biden districts in New York that flipped in 2022, helping deliver the GOP majority in Congress.
