China threat against Greenland is unfounded, Beijing says
Beijing said on Thursday that the idea China poses a threat to Greenland was “completely unfounded,” responding to reports that NATO and US President Donald Trump had discussed keeping China and Russia from gaining a foothold on the Arctic territory. “The so-called ‘China threat’ is completely unfounded, and China opposes the practice of using China as a pretext for pursuing selfish interests,” foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a regular press briefing. Finland’s Ruuska wins Egypt Golf Series opener with 10-under-par final round
Finnish golfer Lauri Ruuska won the Egypt Golf Series – New Giza title after carding an exceptional final round of 10-under-par 62 to finish one stroke ahead of the field at the New Giza Golf Club. Ruuska, who received an $18,000 winner’s prize from a total tournament purse of $100,000, said the victory held special value as it was his first competitive appearance since September. Madbouly opens largest-ever Cairo International Book Fair with record international participation

Trump vows to ‘get back on track’ Nile dam deal in meeting with Al-Sisi
US President Donald Trump pledged to resume mediation of the long-standing dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Wednesday. Speaking during the meeting with Al-Sisi on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump stated he would seek to bring Egyptian and Ethiopian leadership together to reach a settlement. “I said it before, I reiterate it now… but for President Trump, we wouldn’t have reached an agreement on Gaza,” Al-Sisi told reporters. Trump praised Al-Sisi as a “great leader” and “strong guy,” noting the long-standing relationship between the two men. The meeting was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and the Director of the General Intelligence Service, Hassan Rashad.

Madbouly says Egypt has paid $5bn of arrears to foreign oil partners
Egypt has paid approximately $5bn of outstanding arrears to foreign partners in the petroleum sector and remains committed to settling regular monthly invoices, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Wednesday. Speaking during a weekly cabinet meeting at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, Madbouly stated that arrears to foreign partners stood at $6.1bn on June 30, 2024. The Prime Minister referred to a meeting held by the President to review efforts regarding Egypt’s strategy to become a regional hub for energy and gas trade. Madbouly said there are directives to intensify exploration to expand the scope of discoveries and benefit from successful experiences. The Prime Minister emphasised that the Egyptian state is committed to paying the dues of foreign partners in the petroleum sector according to a specific timeline, in addition to adhering to the monthly bills for those partners.

Government approves measures to boost tourism investment
Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny chaired a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Tourism Development Authority (TDA) to review the authority’s work agenda, assess the progress of tourism development projects, and discuss ways to accelerate tourism investment. During the meeting, the board approved a package of measures aimed at stimulating tourism investment. These include rescheduling instalment payments for tourism development and investment companies, without affecting the deadlines for subsequent payments, within the framework of facilitation measures previously endorsed by the board. The approved package also includes extending the grace period granted to tourism development and investment companies that have obtained initial approvals and are committed to settling their financial obligations. At the conclusion of the meeting, El-Sherbiny instructed continued coordination and intensified efforts to advance tourism investment and keep pace with developments across the sector.

Syria warns of booby-trapped sites as Hasakah arrests threaten 4-day ceasefire with SDF
The Syrian army’s Operations Command warned civilians in the provinces of Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and eastern Aleppo on Wednesday against entering Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) sites or tunnels, alleging the areas have been heavily booby-trapped. It includes the withdrawal of all SDF military formations to the east of the Euphrates River as a preliminary step for redeployment. Under the terms, the Syrian government is to receive full and immediate administrative and military control of the Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa provinces. The agreement also provides for the integration of all civilian institutions in Hasakah province into Syrian state structures and gives the government control over all border crossings and oil and gas fields in the region. Separately, the SDF on Wednesday denied what it termed “misleading claims” regarding an explosion in the Tel Kojer/Al-Ya’rubiyah area.
