First, the actual trade relationship between Canada and China, while significant, remains modest in scale compared with Canada’s ties to the United States. In 2024, Canadian exports to China totalled about $21.1bn, accounting for only a small fraction of Canada’s overall exports. These numbers provide critical context: China is a notable trade partner, but far from Canada’s dominant export market. Canada’s trade with China — though substantial in absolute terms — is economically limited relative to its U.S. ties. The broader dispute reflects how nations like the United States react when traditional trade dominance is perceived to be challenged, even modestly.

Just days ago, during a White House press conference, Trump publicly suggested that the Board of Peace “could” replace the United Nations. Under the proposed structure, Donald Trump himself would serve as President of the Board of Peace. The proposed Board of Peace appears poised not to remedy these flaws, but to institutionalise them under a single leader’s control. The proposed Board of Peace will likely not be the last of Trump’s bold — or erratic — experiments in global power projection. With striking audacity, he continues to pursue a vision of unilateral American dominance, presenting the United States as an unassailable global force — at least in his own imagination.

The Minister of Petroleum reviews the results of the Rystad Energy report and Egypt’s strategic efforts to become a regional gas hub. During Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, presented a report on Egypt issued by Rystad Energy on December 12th, titled “Resetting Egypt’s Gas Sector: Debt Settlement, Reviving Drilling Activity, and Expanding Renewable Energy.”Minister Badawi explained that the report indicates the Egyptian petroleum sector is undergoing a significant structural restructuring, driven by unprecedented government interventions and practical policy reforms. The report links the development of conventional fields with the goals of the energy transition. Despite the challenges associated with declining production from some fields and the natural decline in output from existing assets, the Egyptian government has become more effective due to its efforts to stabilize production levels, accelerate the pace of exploration for new discoveries, launch a large number of licensing rounds, review the gas pricing structure, and address the issue of outstanding payments to partners.
