Pre-pandemic, the IN Series hadn’t so much as considered expanding its online presence, let alone produce original digital content. “Even if we had thought about it, we would have really struggled…because our audience wouldn’t have known how to work the technology,” Nelson says. “All of that will be available to stream for free.”The new season of the IN Series officially kicks off next weekend with the COVID-inspired “A Festival Through Grief to Hope.” The core of the four-event, multi-venue Opening Weekend Festival is a trilogy of opera films created by the IN Series in 2020, featuring music by Gluck, Schumann, and Wagner. As Nelson puts it, “we’re trying to find hope amidst all of the terrible wreckage.”The Opening Weekend Festival runs Thursday, Sept. 23, through Sunday, Sept. 26, at various venues around town. All past and upcoming IN Series productions can be accessed at https://invision.inseries.org.

Steve NeavlingDutch Girl Donuts is located at 19000 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. According to The Detroit News, Timmer had succumbed to a battle with cancer that the Dutch Girl Donuts' owner, husband, father, and grandfather, had quietly endured for more than a year and a half. Timmer's parents, John and Cecilia, founded Dutch Girl Donuts in 1947 after taking over a former Dixie Cream Donut location. However, as a result of low staffing and health issues, Dutch Girl Donuts has since been forced to close and reassess its business strategy. If Dutch Girl Donuts can survive through to next year, the doughnut shop will reach its 75th anniversary, though Parrow says that maybe after 75 years, it might be time to call it quits.

“When this scandal hit, I was in sixth grade in Norman, Oklahoma,” says Abe Sylvia, the 46-year-old screenwriter of The Eyes of Tammy Faye. In the movie, the avarice and sins are mostly relegated to Jim Bakker, played with deliberate, unassuming blandness by Andrew Garfield. (Tammy Faye, who later remarried, passed away in 2007.) It also shows, quite pointedly, how Tammy Faye attempted to bring change to a religious system that wasn’t inclusive. The movie includes a key moment in which Tammy Faye interviews, via closed-circuit TV in 1985, Steve Pieters, a gay man afflicted with HIV/AIDS.

An epic journey rendered in the space of a well-lit stage, Round House Theatre’s regional premiere of Quixote Nuevo (★★★☆☆) enchants and entertains, without delivering the knockout punch implied by playwright Octavio Solis’ poignant Don Quixote adaptation. Quixote insists that he left his beloved Dulcinea on the other side of the border and he must return to her. Similarly, the puppetry, used to depict the love story of young Quixote and Dulcinea, reflects the atmosphere and expressiveness of the production, without fully transmitting the requisite emotion. Quixote Nuevo in-person performances run through October 3 at Round House, 4545 East-West Highway in Bethesda. It wasn’t long before Jamie and his mother’s inspiring story, and the not-insignificant popularity of all things high school prom, begat the 2017 hit London stage musical, and now film adaptation, Everybody’s Talking about Jamie (★★☆☆☆), with music by Dan Gillespie Sells, and book and lyrics by Tom MacRae. It would take confidence and courage for him to be himself anywhere, let alone in high school. His persuasive performance betrays the contrivances of a first act that follows Jamie slowly building up nerve that’s already apparent. Everybody’s talking only about Jamie might be a more accurate heading. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is available for streaming on Prime Video.

Pope Francis has once again stated that the Catholic Church won’t bless same-sex marriages, calling it a divine sacrament that the church cannot change. Speaking to reporters last week, Francis was asked if he approves of European countries passing laws recognizing marriage equality, the Associated Press reports. Marriage is a sacrament,” the Pope replied. Despite opposing Catholic Church blessings same-sex marriages, Pope Francis rejected those who would condemn gay people. “Marriage is marriage, but this does not mean condemning [homosexual] people,” he said.

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Manchester City will have to field several youngsters in Tuesday’s League Cup clash against Wycombe Wanderers as a number of players are suffering from injuries, manager Pep Guardiola said. “I don’t have any alternative (against Wycombe)… we are going to play a few young players,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by the club’s website on Sunday. “We have John (Stones), Aymeric (Laporte), Oleks (Zinchenko), Rodri and I think (Ilkay) Gundogan all of them injured. “Some players might rest for the games we have coming up ahead of us,” he added. “Ruben (Dias) played all of the minutes so far and Joao (Cancelo) played all of the minutes, too, so I don’t think they will be able to play in this game.”(Reporting by Peter Hall, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

TURIN, Italy (Reuters) – Angry Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said it was lucky the final whistle blew in the 1-1 home draw with AC Milan on Sunday because his team could have lost. Ante Rebic equalised late in the second half and Milan had chances to win as the Turin side failed to keep a Serie A clean sheet for the first time since early March. “Luckily the referee whistled for the end otherwise we could have lost it,” Allegri told DAZN. The team played well in the first half, only conceding a long shot to Milan. “As always, Milan do not lack desire, character, determination and grit, so we continued seeking the victory throughout the match.

VALENCIA (Reuters) -Real Madrid forwards Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema scored within the space of three minutes deep in the second half to propel their side to a 2-1 win at Valencia in LaLiga on Sunday after the visitors were outplayed for most of the game. Valencia went ahead in the 66th minute with a thumping low strike from forward Hugo Duro, who spent last season on loan with Madrid. Valencia would have gone top had they held on for the win but instead Carlo Ancelotti’s Real side lead the standings on 13 points from five games, with the hosts third on 10. “We know what Real Madrid are like, we know they can turn the game around at any stage,” said Duro. We were very unlucky to not at least get a draw today.”(Reporting by Richard Martin; Editing by Ken Ferris)

BAMAKO (Reuters) -France’s Armed Forces Minister arrived in Mali on Sunday to pressure the military junta to end talks to bring Russian mercenaries into the country and push it to keep a promise to return the country to constitutional order in February. The visit by Florence Parly to Mali is the highest-level trip by French officials since the talks with Wagner emerged. French officials describe the relationship with the junta as “complicated”, although it still relies on Paris for counter-terrorism operations. Paris said on Thursday it had killed the leader of Islamic State in Western Sahara in northern Mali. The French army started redeploying troops from its bases in Kidal, Tessalit and Timbuktu in northern Mali at the start of the month, French army sources have said.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Opponents accused Russian authorities of mass fraud on Monday after the ruling United Russia party, which supports President Vladimir Putin, won a bigger than expected parliamentary majority despite unease over living standards. The scale of the victory means United Russia will have more than two-thirds of deputies in the 450-seat State Duma lower house of parliament. United Russia, a party that Putin helped found, had always been expected to win. Candidates opposed to United Russia in the capital had been ahead in more than half of 15 electoral districts, but all lost after electronic voters were added in. The near complete results showed the Communist Party finishing in second, followed by the nationalist LDPR party and the Fair Russia party with around 7.5% each.
