Social Welfare Minister Dipu Moni’s residence in Chandpur has been attacked during a non-cooperation movement demanding the government's resignation. The ground floor of the building houses the office of the Daily Chandpur Barta. Shahid Patwary, its acting editor, said the BNP-Jamaat activists vandalised several motorcycles and building pipes on the ground floor. Patwary also said they attacked the Daily Chandpur Barta office, breaking the window panes. At the time of the incident, Dipu Moni was in Dhaka, but her relatives were at home, party workers said.

Many active large fires are currently burning in parts of the western U.S. and throughout many regions of Canada. As a result, much of the nation, like Ithaca, is seeing hazy skies. Fortunately, once the smoke is lofted into the jet stream, it largely stays in the jet stream. However, many communities located near almost 30 current wildfires have been ordered to evacuate.

BEIJING, Aug 4, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - A landslide that hit a village insouthwestern China and caused a highway bridge to collapse killed at leasteight people and left 19 missing, state media said Sunday. A flash flood and mudslide caused the collapse of a highway bridge thatlinked two tunnels, with four cars carrying 11 people plummeting off it,state broadcaster CCTV said on Sunday. In the village of Ridi, near the collapsed bridge, six other people werekilled and 11 were missing, according to CCTV. Last month, the collapse of a highway bridge in northern Shaanxi provincekilled 38 people and left 24 missing, state media said on Friday. Heavy rains in central China this week have also killed at least 30 peopleand left 35 missing, according to a provisional toll published on Thursday.

The dead body of another youth was taken to Syed Nazrul Medical College Hospital after the incident. Later, around 12pm, when the demonstrators reached the Kishoreganj Awami League Office premises, clashes broke out between them and the ruling party workers. The attackers then vandalised and set the district Awami League office on fire. Ashfaq is the cousin of the late Awami League general secretary, Syed Ashraful Islam. He withdrew from the race in support of Syed Ashraf’s brother, Major General Shafayatul Islam, an independent candidate.

Awami League activists had taken up positions near the SP Institute. Suddenly, the protesters marched towards Madhabdi town and the Awami League activists gave chase. On Sunday, protestors were seen demonstrating in front of the court premises around 10:30 am, as per bdnews24.com reports. The protesters were chanting slogans calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and justice for those killed in the recent violence surrounding the quota reform protests. Pro-Awami League and pro-BNP lawyers were also seen holding duelling protests at the court premises. During that time, a police vehicle was vandalised and set on fire on the capital’s Johnson’s Road.

Protesters taking part in a non-cooperation programme to demand the resignation of the government have begun to gather at Dhaka’s Shahbagh. Students and people of different classes and professions began to gather at the intersection around 10:30am on Sunday, blocking traffic on all sides. The protesters chanted slogans calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and justice for those killed in the recent violence surrounding the quota reform protests. The Anti-discrimination Student Movement has called protests and mass rallies at several different points across the country as part of its non-cooperation programme. There will also be protests and rallies at Dhaka’s Science Laboratory, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Technical, Mirpur-10, Rampura, Tejgaon, Farmgate, Panthapath, Jatrabari, and Uttara.
