"I think they will present to the assembly the skeleton of the instrument:there is agreement on the principles and structure." Gopakumar said negotiators had this week "greened a few non-contentiousareas", but on "all issues which are contentious, there is no consensus".

In 1960, I became consumed with the Civil War as America approached the 100th Anniversary of its beginning. I learned a great deal about the Civil War — what happened, where it happened and how many casualties there were. As the country continues to grapple with deep divisions based on race and class, and pundits explore whether we’re headed toward a second Civil War, of the kind shown in Alex Garland’s new dystopian movie, I’ve been thinking about these questions and clarifying my understanding of the Civil War in today’s context. What was promoted and marketed to children like me in the early 1960s was a whitewashed version of the dark, ugly reality that was the American Civil War. That’s what the Civil War was really about.

It’s no surprise that the loss of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has thrown the commute of tens of thousands into what is often traffic stalemate (“Key Bridge collapse’s impact on Baltimore tunnels, I-95 traffic revealed in data,” May 20). As The Baltimore Sun has reported, “Southbound traffic heading from Southeast Baltimore’s Canton neighborhood to South Baltimore increased nearly 12% in the week ending March 30 from the week prior, while northbound traffic increased by nearly 11%. In 2023, the increase in the same weeks was around 4.4% and 6.5%, respectively.”What isn’t helping, however, is the ongoing repair work in the Harbor Tunnel. I understand that this was, presumably, scheduled well in advance of the Key Bridge tragedy and that the scheduled repairs are essential. — Sherry Bithell, OverleaAdd your voice: Respond to this piece or other Sun content by submitting your own letter.

The Criminal Investigation Department of India’s West Bengal has arrested a butcher named Jihad Hawladar suspecting his involvement in the murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar. Several Indian news publishers reported that Jihad had disclosed shocking details of the gruesome murder of the MP during the CID’s interrogation after his arrest in West Bengal state’s Bangaon on Thursday. The killers later removed the skin and applied turmeric to the body parts so that if anyone asked about what they were carrying, they could say it was meat for cooking. He had told them that parts of Anar’s body were dumped there after the killing, but authorities found no evidence at the place. He trespassed to India and was brought to Kolkata from Mumbai by the accused two months before Anar’s murder.

It’s not like me to get up in the morning and ask myself what will my next sign be? A sign that could be fun to notice on your way to god knows where, and think what’s that? When Rob showed me the shape of a heron cut into red steel, I knew two things: I wanted that heron. Our sign would be installed in that little circular area off to the left of the remodeled Bainbridge ferry terminal. Our sign had nowhere else to go — I did it for the sign.
