MONROVIA, Oct 1, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - Three people have been killed in clashes in Liberia between supporters of the country's two main political parties ahead of next week's elections, according to the UN and a West African regional bloc. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the UN said on Saturday that the violence broke out in the northwestern Lofa county leading to the "loss of three lives". Liberia's main political parties pledged in April 2023 to avoid violence and turn to the courts to resolve electoral conflicts that may arise before and after the polls. Both political parties blamed each other for the clashes. More than 2.4 million voters are registered for the October 10 presidential and parliamentary elections.

FIRTH — Blake Macklin had a huge rushing day for the Norris Titans Friday night in a win over rival Beatrice. Four plays later, quarterback Crew Meints found Trey Henning streaking down the sideline for a 37 yard touchdown pass. The Orangemen offense went three-and-out on their next drive and punted the ball back to Norris at their own 35 yard line. A face mask penalty and several run plays by John Riesen set up an eventual 17 yard touchdown run by Meints. A 15 yard run by Macklin followed by a 40 yard touchdown run by Macklin extended the Norris lead to 28-12.

Modernizing the Husker game day experience may mean ending the policy that has allowed some fans to keep the same seats in Memorial Stadium for decades without paying a donation required of other fans seeking season tickets. Roughly one-third of what Alberts considers the “best seats” in Memorial Stadium have been grandfathered in for 30 years or more, meaning those fans do not pay a donation. “Increasingly, most of our fans are telling us it’s hard to rationalize that spend when the person next to me is paying $0,” Alberts said. “If we eliminated the grandfather clause, I think people would pay a lot less,” the athletic director said. MALE, Maldives, Sept 30, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - The Maldives began voting Saturday to decide their next president in a referendum on whether to hitch their fortunes to China or India, both vying for influence in the tropical paradise. Frontrunner Mohamed Muizzu, 45, has vowed closer ties with Beijing and a review of relations with India if he is elected. People began lining up across the archipelago, best known for its luxury beach resorts and celebrity tourists, to cast their ballots before voting began at 8:00 am (0300 GMT). Just over 282,000 people are eligible to vote before polls close at 5:00 pm, with results expected late Saturday or early Sunday. But his restoration of the Maldives' traditional posture has itself proved controversial, with many in the archipelago disapproving of India's outsized political and economic clout.

Rebecca Sparacio: Since I have the honor of writing a column with Professor Daniel Schwarz, I’ve chosen to have a conversation about how the English major has changed over time. In the post-World War II world, American Literature was still fighting for a place for full curricula representation. For much of my years here each student was required to take a two-semester chronological survey of English Literature beginning with Chaucer, if not before. RLS: The term “Native American” or Native American literature is nowhere to be found in 1980. RLS: I’ve taken a wide range of English courses now that I’m a senior.

In my living room, and others across Collegetown and the U.S., we watched as Charity chose a husband. In a cruel but compelling moment, Charity recites a speech to Joey, telling him how much she cares for him and how wonderful their time together has been. I was struck by the idea of having footage of such a moment that even in unrecorded form, would hurt to look back on. Beyond this, there were countless sweet and private moments between Charity and Joey in prior episodes. Hopefully, I’d find the proof that would verify my memory or at least a definitive contradiction that would put my questions to rest.
