Ex-Farmers Bank official Chisty, his son get 12 years in jail over embezzlement
The court imposed a fine of Tk 3.1 billion, double the embezzled amount on Babul, his wife, and his son. The jail terms for Babul and Rashedul would be extended by another two years, and for Rosy, by another year, if they fail to pay. Another convict, Masudur Rahman, will have to pay a Tk 1 million fine. Babul was brought to court from jail for the verdict, while his son Rashedul Haque, out on bail, was present as well. Both Babul and Rashedul were taken to jail after the verdict was announced.

Stern action will be taken if BNP creates anarchy again: AmuDHAKA, Oct 30, 2023 (BSS) - Awami League (AL) advisory council member and 14-party alliance spokesperson Amir Hossain Amu today said strict action will be taken against BNP if the party will create anarchy in the name of movement in the country again. In 2014, BNP had arson attack a total of 6.50 educational institutions and they (BNP) had killed a total of 18 policemen, said Amu. He urged all to remain alert against the BNP's any kind of conspiracy under the AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Workers Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon said BNP-Jamaat has failed through their terrorist activities on October 28. Jatiya Party (JP) Secretary General Sheikh Shahidul Islam said the non communal unity will be built like Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman against BNP-Jamaat.

Internet users to face slow speed for 20 hours
Internet service will be temporarily disrupted in Bangladesh from Tuesday morning as maintenance work is carried out on the submarine cable, authorities say. The upgrading of the country’s first submarine cable system in Cox’s Bazar is ongoing, according to Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC. The circuits connected to this cable will be partially closed for maintenance from 2 am to 12 pm on Tuesday and 2 am to 12 pm on Thursday.

BNP and Jamaat have not changed: FM Momen to diplomats
Three ministers, including Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, and one advisor to the government have briefed foreign diplomats about Bangladesh's current political climate in the aftermath of the violence surrounding the BNP’s antigovernment rally on Oct 28. The foreign minister said that the government was shocked by what happened on Oct 28, but was not caught off guard because they had previous experience of the violence the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are capable of. “They have not learnt anything from the past,” Momen said. “BNP has a long history of violence and vandalism and they are doing it again.”Momen said that, despite hopes for a more peaceful turn, the opposition parties have not changed. Representatives from nearly every foreign mission in Dhaka, the UN, and members of different international agencies attended the briefing.

More than 80 shops burnt in fire at BD's largest textile market in Narsingdi
A fire has broken out at Baburhat wholesale textile market in Narsingdi – the largest in Bangladesh. Citing the traders, bdnews24.com reported that it was unclear where the fire had originated as the market houses around 2,500 shops on narrow corridors. According to estimates, the fire burnt more than 80 shops in two hours. The market at Baburhat is one of the traditional sales hubs of local fabrics in Bangladesh. Several indigenous fabrics of the market, including gamchha and lungi, are famous throughout the country and exported as well.

Fears of more violent confrontations have gripped Bangladesh with political tensions roiling after the BNP announced a three-day blockade following deaths in clashes centring its Dhaka rally and a subsequent shutdown. The blockade, announced on Sunday and to start on Tuesday, is a grim reminder of the BNP’s similar monthslong programme during which more than 100 people died in firebombing of buses and other public transports after the 2014 elections boycotted by the party. “We’re waiting for the next programmes to be announced by the party leadership. We’re ready to hold any sort of programmes,” said Sohrab Hasan, a local leader of BNP’s youth front Jubo Dal from Cumilla. The outcome of the movement to oust the government will be determined on the streets.”

Police detain US citizen who falsely identified himself as Biden’s advisor at BNP office
After quizzing Arefy, Harunor Rashid, chief of DMP’s DB, said Arefy is a native of Pabna. He moved to the US in mid 1980s with the help of his brother and has been living in Dhaka’s Baridhara since his return in 2022. He became close to Sarwardy during his stay in Baridhara and agreed to return to Dhaka from the US ahead of the BNP’s Oct 28 rally. Harunor said Sarwardy and Ishraque falsely identified him as an advisor to Biden and made him say that the US will target Bangladesh with more sanctions. The police officer also said they were checking if Arefy had falsified in exchange for money from the BNP leaders.

Bangladesh Film Certification Bill, 2023 passed
SANGSAD BHABAN, Oct 29, 2023 (BSS) - Bangladesh Film Certification Bill, 2023 today passed in the Jatiya Sangsad with an objective of development and protecting the creativity of the film industries. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud move the bill which was passed by voice votes in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. Piloting the bill, the minister said the proposed law will replace the Censorship of Films Act, 1963 and it will play significant role in overall development, certification and displaying of film and protecting the local film industry as well. The proposed law although a new one but it has nothing special, said opposition lawmaker Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary. Replying to an allegation of not making film with the government grant, he said even there is no any single case of not making any film despite taking the grant money from the government.
