The start of 2023 brought good news for Bangladesh’s economy – the approval of a $3.3 billion loan agreement by the International Monetary Fund. Despite the global lender’s help, the economy has failed to overcome many of its hurdles. Economist Zaid Bakht, the chairman of Agrani Bank, thinks the efforts to stabilise the economy will gain pace once the new government takes charge after the election. The Russia-Ukraine war’s effects have begun to fade, but falling dollar reserves and runaway inflation headlined Bangladesh’s economy throughout 2023. Import prices rose as the taka devalued against the dollar, fuel prices jumped as subsidies were cut, export growth slowed, and money laundering under the guise of exports haunted the economy.

In my English Composition class, we discuss developing technology and spend time talking about the pull of social media. Estimates are that by 10 years of age, 42% of American children have a phone. And my students already know the data – social media stresses you out, it can make teenagers depressed, it makes conversations in real life awkward. There have been many articles about how tech workers in Silicon Valley ban or limit social media for their own children, even as they sell it to ours. It’s a start, but perhaps it is time for another conversation: to mandate an age limit for smartphones.

If, like me, you struggle with your self-confidence, your resolutions can sound a bit too good to be true. And, as our old habits kick in and we lose faith in ourselves, those goals can seem further and further out of reach. Then, when I made a mistake, it felt almost comfortable because I was returning to the routines and habits of my usual life. This fed back into my feelings of inadequacy and the lingering worry that I would never reach my full potential. With this realisation, I began looking forward to making this round of resolutions a bit different.

In Sydney, the self-proclaimed "New Year's capital of the world", more than a million partygoers are expected to pack the city's foreshore, despite uncharacteristically dank weather. Eight tonnes of fireworks will light the fuse on 2024, a year that will bring elections concerning half the world's population and a summer Olympiad celebrated in Paris. The last 12 months brought "Barbiegeddon" at the box office, a proliferation of human-seeming artificial intelligence tools and a world-first whole-eye transplant.
