Bangladesh are facing an uphill battle in the Colombo Test after Sri Lanka closed Day 2 on 290 for 2, securing a 43-run lead, powered by an unbeaten 146 from the opener Pathum Nissanka and a fluent 93 from Dinesh Chandimal. Having bowled out Bangladesh for 247 earlier in the morning, Sri Lanka dominated with the bat despite brief periods of resistance from Bangladesh’s bowlers at the SCC on Thursday. In response, Sri Lanka got off to a fluent start as Udara and Nissanka added 88 for the first wicket before Bangladesh briefly applied pressure with tighter spells from Miraz and Taijul. However, a marathon 194-run stand between Nissanka and Chandimal wore down the visitors’ attack. He eventually dismissed Chandimal but was unable to trouble the in-form Nissanka, who punished anything loose and looked increasingly unflappable as the day progressed.

National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan has said he is in the midst of a serious crisis as officials and employees continue their protests against reforms introduced by the interim government. Despite this, the platform leading the protests -- NBR Reform Unity Council -- has decided to boycott the meeting, saying they were not officially invited. Earlier in the week, the Reform Unity Council announced that if the chairman was not removed by Friday, they would launch a “complete shutdown” of all income tax, customs, and VAT offices starting Saturday. The unrest began in May after the government split the NBR into two separate wings, Revenue Management and Revenue Policy, through an ordinance. Facing mounting pressure, the government later agreed to hold consultations with NBR officials before implementing the changes.

Google Trends data shows searches for the term "flying fear" in India hit "peak popularity" a day after the Air India crash, and the phrase was still being widely searched. The disturbing footage was a key cause of the panic among Indian travellers, five mental health experts said. Since the crash, many travellers fear travelling with Air India and are seeking alternative airlines, according to Jaya Tours, a mid-sized booking agency in Mumbai. Taken over by the Tata Group from the Indian government in 2022, Air India continues to face criticism for poor service and an outdated fleet. The Indian Association of Tour Operators, which represents more than 1,600 agents, said overall flight bookings dropped by 15-20% soon after the Air India crash, while 30-40% of booked tickets were also cancelled.

Mitchell Starc, skipper Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood saved Australia's blushes, taking four wickets between them to send the West Indies in at stumps at 57 for four, trailing the tourists by 123 runs to leave the match delicately poised. He got through the top order and made it easy for us in the middle and at the end." Australia, already vulnerable with Steve Smith sidelined by injury and Marnus Labuschagne axed, watched in dismay as their re-jigged top order wilted under relentless pressure from the Caribbean quicks. The 25-year-old then delivered a scorching delivery that all-rounder Cameron Green could only edge to Justin Greaves at second slip. West Indies would have fancied their chances at that point, but Starc had other plans, snapping up the wickets of Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell in an action-packed opening spell.

Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has admitted the interim government has failed to bring drug trafficking and corruption under control, describing both as “enemies of the nation”. Speaking at an event at the home ministry marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, he said rehabilitation centres alone will not solve the problem. Jahangir blamed cross-border supply routes for fuelling the drug trade, claiming that small phensedyl factories have been set up in India solely to “smuggle” the substance into Bangladesh. On the flow of yaba from neighbouring countries, he said “a force in another country is heavily dependent on the yaba trade, using it as their main source of income to run entire households”. The Adviser warned that no one involved in the drug trade would be spared, including members of the law-enforcing agencies.
